Uni iversi New Di' nnounces iNew Mvisiona Structure The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has announced a new divisional structure for its academic program. The plan was approved by the Executive Committee of the University of North Carolina Board of Trustees. Under the plan the University will be organized into six divisions with possibly one or two more added later. Chairmen were appointed to head the new divisions. The divisions and their chairmen are: —Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Dr. Philip E. Hildreth. He is also chairman of the Biology Department and Distinguished Professor of Biology. --Social and Behavioral Sciences, Dr. Norman W. Schul. He is also chairman and associate professor of the Department of Geography and Geology. -Humanities, Dr. William S. Mathis. He is also chairman of the Department of Fine Arts and professor of music. —Economics and Business Administration. Dr. Allan V. Palmer. He is also professor of economics and business administration. -Engineering, Dr. Newton H. Barnette. He is also professor of electrical engineering. —Nursing, Mrs. Edith P. Brocker. She is also professor of nursing. UNC-C Chancellor D. W. Colvard said that he expects the new structure to broaden the scope of interdepartmental cooperation and to give the University a better balanced administrative structure. In the fall of 1967, the first permanent departments were organized in the University. The divisional concept carries the organization a major step forward toward a true university organization. UNC-C officials had been considering organizing the institution into a college of arts and sciences with departments of economics and business administration, engineering and nursing outside the college structure. Dr. Colvard said that it was believed that with the divisional structure the University can remain more flexible and can prepare better for the growth of the institution. “In some instances the divisions may grow into schools and colleges,” he said. “The divisional chairmen together will form an academic council, roughly equivalent to a council of deans,” Dr. Colvard said. In other action the UNC Executive Committee approved the change in title of Dr. Robert M. Wallace from acting chairman of the Department of English to chairman. He is also professor of English. H. Leon Gatlin, III, was promoted from instructor to assistant professor of English following the completion of his doctoral degree. c E by The Union is your opportunity, and only with you can the job of programming be efficient, entertaining, and exoteric.
