Singing “Go Away Little Boy”. Miss Shaw began an evening of entertainment consisting of her lovely and original songs, occasionally spiced by her unique wit. To quote Miss Shaw, it was “sock-it-to-me time!" The audience Ouctuated from tears to laughjer as the very vcrsatible performer sang familiar songs such as “By The Time 1 Get to Phoenix", “On A Clear Day", and many light, wispy tunes. Accompanyiirg Miss Shaw was the very fine and celebrated musician Lrronis McGlohon. McGlohon and his orchestra provided a variety of dance music between performances. In an interview with Miss Shaw before her performance here, this writer was graciously received, and she offered information about herself freely and frequently quite humorously. She lives in New Rochell, N.Y. where she began her career singing jazz with her uncle, who played the trumpet. Asked if she would change her field of music, she replied very definitely, “No.” She said, “Jazz is just a part of your ‘thing’.” Jazz is in her and. as she said, if she tried to sing anything else, the result would have a jazz flavor to it. She has appeared at numerous night clubs and Playboy Clubs. Asked if performing at a Playboy Club is different from a night club, she said, “No, but the first time I sang there, I wore a dress up to my neck and down to my ankles-just to be different!” beautiful. At the party, she was poised, relaxed and forever srniling-the necessities for a professional. Althougli there were smiles and charm for the disc jockies and distributors, Miss Shaw says while on stage she sells Marlena Shaw, not the record she sings-and Friday night at the Club University that’s just what she Though coming to UNC-C for her performance directly from a party with record distributors, Marlena Shaw looked fresh and did!
