Victoria Carter and Jaynce Connell played excellent roles as village women, especially Miss Carter’s Mrs. Butcher Beynon. Miss Connell has been better. Thomas’ narrative is often beautiful-sounding at the expense of meaning; his dialogue often suffers from the same malady; his songs are poor imitations of Joyce’s singsong seranades in ULYSSES. But this is not to say that the play is entirely without merit - Dylan’s theme of sex for sex’s sake comes through quite clearly. Most of the characters pivot on their lines concerning sex, and the UNC-C cast does an excellent job of conveying this sensuality. The play is far from great; the interpretation is laudable; the characterizations are good; and the entertainment value is high, despite a few flaws in clarity and accent. Not a standing ovation, but a curtain call. ^^Secret Ceremony' Feedback (Continued from Page 6) previous years. Certainly Mr. R. T Smith would not want to be written into the history of the school as a complacent, non-interested editor. After all, according to a Charlotte News interview, he considers himself the most intellectual person to have hit the UNC-C campus. Mr. Smith, you have an image to uphold as a crusading young editor working for the betterment of humanity. Therefore, you should work and strive to find things to gripe about so you may inflict your unimportant opinion upon your readers (few that they are.) There are better things to do in Charlotte than to see the same flick twice. THE FOX is at the Dilworth. It was one of the really best shows of last year. Ibr it, same advice as for THE GRADUATE. For hints about the best celuloid in town, see will’s review of Zeffirelli’s ROMEO AND JULIET (also see review of Zepeda’s and reviews of Zeffirelli’s (Continued from Page 5) Cinema 11, has retained much of the ribaldry of the Elizabethen drama, along with colorful costumes and effective scenery. The film’s good points far outweigh its deficiencies, and tire sense of tragedy is completed by the brief (very brief) relief after the final scene in tire vault burial of the Capulets. Miss Hussey adds a youthful zest and flightiness that has seldom been preserved, her speaking pace alters with the mood to either intensify or soften the emotion behind the words, and her facial expressions are quite skillful for one so young. Leonard Whiting IS Romeo, that “virtuous and well-governed youth” that Shakespeare was writing about. His anxiousness and excitement in the garden scene may be the only great scene he’ll ever perform, but it truly is greatness personified. The two work together artistically and with feeling in probably the greatest love scene of the stage. For this performance, several Oscars should be awarded one to Zeffirelli, one to Milo O’Shea, one to Olivia Hussey, one to John McEnery, and at least one to William Shakespeare-playwriglit supreme.
