The grant paves the way for beginning the $3.9-million project “in the very near future,” said UNC-C Chancellor Dean W. Colvard. “This removes the final bottleneck,” he said. The N. C. legislature appropriated more than $2.8 million in its last session for the 165-foot addition to the J. Murrey Atkins Library. Construction had been delayed pending the federal grant to fill out the full building budget of nearly $4 million. But planning did not stop, Colvard said, and school officials should be ready to advertise for bids within a week. The plans call for an 1 1-story tower with room for half a million books. It will be built on the slope west of the present library and north of the administration building. The building also will include a vault for archives, a special collections floor for “Carolina” and rare books, and eight floors of stacks with student study nooks. The tower’s top floor will be a richly appointed research reading room, with floor-to-cciling glass walls and small meeting facilities. Ifesides the tower will rise a four-story “service building,” to hold administrative offices, and I HELP! Earn good spending money, working part time on your campu.s.
