Page 2, The Carolina Journal, 1969 Editorials “American Apartheid” Are You To Be Led Like Cattle? A Guest Editorial by JOURNAL Business Manager Wayne Eason One of the more important issues in the news being smeared across the headlines of United States’ newspapers is that of student protest and demonstration. Local radio and television stations have centered some of their editorials around this deep topic of concern. Faculty and administrators have finally come around in a body to investigate that “noisey” segment of the community. Why is all of this happening? Why can’t students be satisfied like Mom and Dad were with being told once that that was it and there’d be no arguing? Why don’t students appreciate what this “affluent” society has done for them and attend class and do what there’re in college to do-learn? There are periodicals upon periodicals in this country that have featured lead articles on student protest and demonstration. Professors and administrators have stood in hallways, in lounges, and have sat in cafeterias discussing the situation. Has anyone asked 'fOU what it’s all about? They probably have, and you, in your psychologically conditioned rut have answered in most vague terms, all but doing something by way of response in avoiding the question. It couldn’t be a very difficult task to run for office on this campus. By merely having your name dropped around a few semesters and putting your name on the list of nominees, you can gain any-yes, ANY-office that your little heart desires. Less than 400 out of some 2300 students recently elected YOUR-or should that read “YOUR?” -Student Government Association officers. Those who won must be thanking all of you 1900 or so students, who without your help, they won. With that win goes the power to rule over you. They will pass rules without asking you, without informing you of what they are doing, and they will expect you to obey just what they have passed into student statute. After the polls close and the winner is declared, wouldn’t you say that it’s a might bit late for you to come bitching? Something should happen on this campus that would blow the lid off traditional institutions. Many of you are tired of small town politics with on group of another miming the show. But, then, that goes back to your degree of participation at the polls, doesn’t it? Recently, The Black Student Union caused a stir. They threatened. They warned. What did you do? You thought that it was just a bunch of black kids asking for some ridiculous changes around here. Did you ever stop to think that they knew their demands couldn’t be met and that their goal was to incite interest in your environment? Students for a Democratic Society have, in the good old American tradition, been called Communists. Be that true of false, they now have achieved their intentions at llarvard-arouse interest in altering the present institution, why must things be run the same year after year? Why DO you settle tor guidance like cattle without using your voice to guide your own education? “1 done said it onee...l ain’t gonna say it again.” Not Withholding We are not witholding any information concerning the recent ol the University, allegedly by a member of the security torce. We just have not been able to glean enough intormation troin the tight-lipped administration to make it worth your while. As soon as the trial comes up, we will be able to communicate further on the matter. For the time being, though, we will tell all we know: (1) the school was robbed ol a substantial sum of money during the Easter holidays (2) one suspect, a campus guard, has been jailed in connection with, the case and (3) the administration is witholding information on the case, possibly as a precaution against causing a mistrial when the case comes to court. Sorry, but that’s all we know for sure at the present deadline. By William Browner Prelude to the “American Apartheid” During my search for information in order to explain the establishment of colonialization in South Africa by use of the “Apartheid Method” 1 uncovered greater insight into the apartheid that exist in our own country by examining the American criticism of the South African apartheid. Throu^ my examination of the American criticism of the South African apartheid. I’ve become aware of the hipocracy that exist in our own country which is being used to perpetuate (the) a similiare situation. I feel that through the apparent openest of the British in South Africa to make their situation clear as to how they feel toward the blacks there, has made it easier for the blacks to plan the de-establishment of the establishment. But the execution of the plan has been least responsive even though they have been made aware of their predicament because of the minds of the black men there. I feel that the different between the blacks of South Africa and of the United States lies not in their predicament but in the openest of the attitudes that enhance that predicament. The white man in the United States has failed to make his position clear as to the true attitude that he holds against the black men of America. He has done this by setting up a translucent front that seem to emit so graceously his generousities toward the black man while behind this front he is simultaneously working for our suppression through the establishment of the “American Apartheir” in a white cloak. But the front is degenerating, and the smell of the white man’s falsities are apparent. So now, more than ever, the black man is more able to discern the actions of the white man and thereby be more efficient in their de-establishment of the establishment. BSU PROGRAM - Practice for the Will Be Held 11:30 Program Wednesday, 25 in Room to be C-122 Presented Will Be Held for the at; Wednesday, 23 Baptist Midwood Friday, 25 Student Baptist Churci at: Union In this seemingly changed society, the white majority in an apparent pseudo-reconciliation of their attitudes toward the blacks have conveyed their changed measures in a way in which they themselves have accepted these measures as legal and genuine for the blacks but falter in their own recognition of them. They have really cheated themselves when they believe that in this modern day society that the black man can be so easily suckered-in while-we the blacks-are in a constant state of reflection upon the past to remind us that the white man makes changes only in the interest of the white while trying to impress the black man that he-the white- has only his-the black man’s-interest in mind when he makes these changes. We can only accept this pseudo-reconciliation by the white man as an insult to the black man’s intelligence. We-the blacks-have re-oriented our efforts toward changes for the black man, but the black man, without any intrusions by the whites, We-the blacks-are refusing to blind ourselves any more with the white man’s conception of Christianity, We-the blacks-have refused to accept the idea that a black man must elevate himself to any white standard because it is Just this standard that we object and will abolish. Wliy should we want to become a part of such an ethnic group that has through all times showed a degradation of character to retain his standard which impressed him with his so-called superiority. The white man in all his so-called efforts for change are only unconsciously allienating the blacks from them, because we-the blacks-are now-as we’ve always been-able to see through these false efforts. White man, wake-up or else there will be changes which may cause your own downfall due to your own stupidity. Recognize the black man’s potential and re-orient yourselves toward a re-structuring of this warped society for the betterment of all. Uncloak these warped attitudes From the Editor and stop being redundant with your false efforts, because the basis for complete change and restructuring of this society will come with a change in the attitude on the part of the white man, not with Amendments and Constitutions, for they live only through their effectiveness which is in turn dependent on our attitude toward them. Our nation is sick and its only hope of reviving lie in the individuals total self-revelation and the destruction of the “American Apartheid.” I have known for the last four SGA Presidents. Three of them I have known well. I also know F. N. Stewart, the President-elect, quite well, so that makes four out of five. With three of these I have shared the close fellowship of the notorious EMFC. Now, I know major, and I may be prejudiced here. Bud and Bill are both reflective young men who delve into the long range implications of questions rather than making hasty and expedient decisions. In this they are alike. They are different, however, in overall image. Bill has always been willing, almost too willing, to stop everything in order to help someone out. He is the world’s friendliest man, and I like him that way. He used this trait to great advantage for the students of UNC-C this past year. Bud, on the other hand, is quieter and seems a great deal colder, and I like him that way. His image is one of commanding authority; this will help. Bud also possesses an ability to delegate authority in a responsible manner. Bill tried, but a lot of the old standbys let him down. As a result, FAC idn’t come off too well, the Academic Was that Bud does not have the intimate knowledge of the workings of the University that Bill Billups had this time last year, but he’s learning fast. I would guess that he knows as much about the functions as John Gaither did this time two years ago. Bud does bring an experience at living and getting along with people to the office. He has a particular ability to get things done. He may not come across as the charming politician that John Gaither was or the energetic crusader that Bill has been, but he’ll do the job. As a philosophy ’liKlSv li I Will Be Affairs Committee has done nothing to date, the Publicity Committee has been far too lenient, and the minor committees have not really accomplished anything worth while. Also, unfortunately , the Student Legislature has not taken advantage of Bill’s valuable experience. Their reactions to most of Bill’s recommendations have been negative. Considering the strong communicative links that exist between Bud and Vice-President-elect Alan Hickok, I don’t think that this problem will be around next year.
