Continuing students this semester noted a moderate rise in the student activity fee. The rising costs of providing services and publications for an increased number of students necessitated a request by campus student officials that the student activity tee be doubled. After a thorou^ study be administration officials, it was decided that a fifty percent increase would be more in line with University student needs. In dollars, the increase was from ten to fifteen dollars. The fee increase was approved by the North Carolina General Assembly who have final authority in all fee changes for state-supported campuses. REX HARRISON BURTON PLAY WHAT? find out the answer in... New dates for the testing of prospective teachers are: November 8, 1969, and January 31, April 4, and July 18, 1970. The tests will be given at nearly 500 locations throughout the United States, ETS said. Results of the National Teacher Examinations are used by many large school districts as one of several factors in the selection of new teachers and by several states for certification or licensing of teachers. Some colleges also require all seniors preparing to teach to take the examinations. The school systems and state departments of education which use the examination results are designated in the Bulletin of Information for Candidates. On each full day of testing, prospective teachers may take the Common Examinations, which measure their professional preparation and general cultural background, and a Teaching Area Examination which measures mastery of the subject they expect to teach. Prospective teachers should contact the school systems in which they seek employment, or their colleges, for specific advice on which examinations to take and on which dates they should be taken. The Bulletin of Information for Candidates contains a list of test centers, and information about the examinations, as well as a Registration Form. Copies may be obtained from college placement officers, school personnel departments, or directly from National Teacher Examinations, Box 911, Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey 08540. Mr. William C. “Bill” Foster was named Head Basketball Coach and Mr. Floyd Kerr was named Director of Intramural Sports. Coach Foster will be in a unique coaching situation in the 1969-1970 season. His time will be devoted to recruiting players and to scheduling and promoting the UNC-C program, while Coach Harvey Murphy will be at the helm of this year’s edition of the 49er cagers. Coach Murphy was quoted as saying, “This arrangement will allow us to build our basketball program much faster. If Coach Foster coached this season, it would delay us at least two years, and probably three, in building a strong NCAA basketball independent.” be preserved.” br. Bostian, who has been Intramural Director on a part-time basis, completed the work for a doctorate this summer and received his degree from the University of Virginia on August 16. He will assist Coach Harvey Murphy in basketball and will coach tennis while performing his primary duties as Director of Basic Instruction Programs in the Department of Physical Education. Success is written all over the coaching career of Coach Foster. As a college head coach, his overall record is an enviable 129-34. This percentage places him with the top winners in the nation. Coach Paul Fleming, UNC-C wrestling mentor, was very active in the recruiting field during the spring and summer. Gary Annis, from Greensboro Smith, a champion at 103 pounds, and Allan Barnette, 138 pound North Carolina champion from North Mecklenburg, head the list of recruits. However, Garry Scotty, a transfer from the University of Cincinnati, and AAU champion in his class, along with Jeff l^rkoff, another University of Cincinnati transfer, may well turn out to be the greatest prizes from Coach Fleming’s recruiting efforts. Foster is a Cum-Laude graduate of Carson Newman College (1958) and received his M.S. from the University of Tennessee. The 1969 Rogues ‘n Rascals yearbook is here! The Rogues ‘n Rascals office is located in the basement of the Student Union Building (below the cafeteria) - - Room B-8. Mr. Floyd Kerr, Director of Intramural Sports, comes to UNC-C via Appalachian State University and Cochrane Junior High School. Intramurals are Mr. Kerr’s specialty. He has an extensive and inclusive program planned for UNC-C. A large number of activities have been added to the intramural agenda, the most extensive of which occurs in the program for women. Athletic Director Dr. Harvey Murphy stated, “We are fortunate to have someone of the caliber of Floyd Kerr to work full time with intramurals. Our program will improve quantatatively just by having someone full time. With Mr. Kerr at the helm, not only with the program improve in terms of quantity, but also the same high quality given to the program by Dr. Larry Bostian will These young wrestlers, along with such other standouts as Rick Lee, Brek Cunninglram, and Robert Hoppe, have the potential to give UNC-C a superlative .■ wrestling program in two or three‘J years. No one will be surprised if that process proceeds even faster under the leadership of Coach Paul Fleming.
