CM % (0 Q. Editorial The Board of Trustees a and Tom White in u 0) E 0) > o z SDS — Ho hum Last May the Board of Trustees, at a meeting on this campus, voted to send a letter to the Chancellors commending them for their actions and the actions of their students when trouble threatened the University. At their next meeting, which was held October 27, the Board unanimously adopted the policy statement on disruptive conduct and the amendment to it which was approved by the Executive Board last summer. Obviously the state of mind of the majority of the Board has altered drastically. The policy which they just adopted as an amendment to their by-laws is not a policy of trust and commendation. The lack of faith in the students of this University was already present in some of the Trustees last year. Last May Tom White stood up and asked that the portion of the student fees which went to THE DAILY TARHEEL and THE TECHNICIAN (the student newspaper on the University campus in Chapel Hill and Raleigh) be taken away entirely because of their use of obscenities. The article to which he was referring was “The Student As Nigger.” We printed this article earlier this year, and if you fail to remember the grossobscenitiesin this article; they were “damn” and “bullshit.” ' I wonder what Mr. White says when he misses the nail and hits his finger with a hammer? We had used at least one of these words too. But, like the rest of the Board of Trustees, he doesn’t read our newspaper so he isn’t aware of the fact. We could get away with anytning down here and they wouldn’t even know it. We don’t have much faith in their working knowledge of this campus. At their meeting last week, one of them referred to it as Charlotte College and said that ne drove by it once last year while the cranes were still on top of the dorms. Sometimes one wonders how much they actually know about us and our campuses besides the direction to Chapel Hill and howto get to the football stadium with their free tickets once they do get there. Tom Wnite is often called one of the most powerful men in this state. He is a former N.C. senator, a member of the Executive Committee of the Be ard, and chairmen for the fourth time of the N. C. Advisor/ Budget Committee. Or as the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER says, he “virtually never raises his voice but seldom has trouble getting people to listen to him.” And now he is down on student newspapers. His constituents wouldn’t approve of such language he said. It was pointed out to him that Caucer uses such language and that Chaucer is taught in the schools. His reply was that his people don’t read Chaucer. Neither do they read the student newspapers of the University of North Carolina. Well, we do read the student newspapers, and we do read and enjoy Chaucer, and neither he nor his voters have the right to tell us what we are going to read. The role of a censor as he is trying is not a very becoming role for an old man to try to assume. Neither is it a becoming role for a Board of Trustees. And in essence this is what he is trying to do. Last May he was more or less laughed down by the Board, so he withdrew his motion. This year their temperment has changed. And he is using a diversionary tactic, but he still has the same end in mind. He questioned the validity of using student fees for the TARHEEL. He maintains that it is uncontitutional or at least that it is questionable if it is constitutional for student fees to be used, for tne newspaper. Because the student nas no voice in determining those fees. Neither does the student have a voice in determining whether or not he pays an athletic tee, or a lab lee, or any other tee wnich that board levys upon this university and its students. Incidently, it would be interesting to have him explain just what the opinion of outsiders has to do with the student newspaper. Like other student activities, they are paid for by the students and are maintained in building which are paid for by student fees, not by the taxes of the people of North Carolina. The Board of Trustees reacting to the activity going on on the college campuses across this country. But they are not reacting to the situation on our campuses. It is impossible for them to kiow the students, the faculty, and the campuses of the six institutions of the consolidated system, at least it is the way they play the game. If they are going to be the governing power of this University it is imperative that they be aware, at first hand, of the situation on our campuses. The Board of Trustees has a responsibility to the people of North Carolina, but they have a higher responsibility to the 4^,000 students over which they rule. And this is a responsibility to which they have failed to respond. Almost two and a half hours I sat there and listened for intellegent utterings. Very closely I listened and I did not hear many. Name: Mike Klonsky Subject: ? Qualifications: (1) former secretary of the nationl S. D.S.. (2) “been in ‘the movement’ since 1965” Zowie. Quotes at random: On Why Women Students At Universities Generally Have More Stringent Rules Concerning Their Comings And Goings And Why They Generally Gotta Be In Earlier Than The Guys: “...they don’t want women free to go to political meetings...that’s right!” On How SDS Plans To Get Right Leaning, Unions (for example: the steel workers in Chicago thatclashed right venonmently with the bearded youths of wonderfulness, recently) To Swing Into The Movement And Push For A More Perfect Communist United States: “...must show the white workers how it is in their best interest to overthrow white supremacy ” Amen, brother. On The Future Of Black Brothers and Sisters In These United States: “The black peoples’ place is in the...(and here Klonsky searched the faces of his audience and then the ceiling for the proper phrase)...concentration camps, it’s going to come.” On The Recent SDS Split In Chicago. Why: It was because even we, the forefront of liberation are “...infected with all these racist and chauvanist ideas.” And we further attributed this infection within the very purest form of purity to the moma’s and daddies cause they brung up the young lions with Carnation milk and chauvanism and therefore even we have our flaws. Interesting But Pointless Points: “Oppression is based on the exploitation of working people.” “These politicians are not really interested in ending the war in Vietnam because ending the war in Vietnam would also mean changing things here at home...” “The thing we’re trying to do in SDS is to unite the oppressed people of this country with the oppressed people all over the world ...and the black movement.” “We here live in the heart of the imperialist monster...” Bravo. Klonsky’s techniques of rabble raising and indoctrination via propaganda do him credit. A plus mark for superior craftsman^ip. Ambiguity in answering questions, getting hot, shouting, interrupting, et al... He done good. Some of the listeners walked in the room with their minds closed and walked out to make a point. Early in the question answer session, Klonsky was asked point blank if he had any admiration toward or support from the commies. He hemmed and hawed and finally admitted something (exactly what I wasn’t sure) and about six people very demonstratively got up and went. Then, after a whole lot of heated argument between the stage floor, one guy spoke very softly...and then got up and left cause he didn’t want to hear the retort. Now speaking softly has its virtues. But one of its drawbacks is that you can’t hear what’s being said. Shmebody else got up and said yes there are many evils in the world but he didn’t agree precisely with the speaker about 1) what they are or 2) how to conquer them. He didn’t offer any alternatives but he was concerned, which was nice. Who was the red-legged body guard who stood at parade rest. Arruggha. Grrr.... SDA-vini, vidi, vici...? Ho hum.
