Last Monday night the Hustlers met the T.1.G.E.R.S in a fast moving girls intramural basketball game. The Tigers took control of the ball from the beginning moments and continued to do so throughout the second quarter. Barbara Mayer and Peg^ Fox were instrumental in pushing the Tigers ahead, 16 to 5, by the end of the first half. The Hustlers came back strong in the second half to hold the Tigers to six points while gaining ei^t. Judy Swaker of the Hustlers stood out for her excellent offensive and defensive play. But they could not close the point gap in time, and the game ended with the Tigers victorious, 22-13. Swaker and Mayer proved number one players for their respective teams with individual totals of eight and nine points. The basketball team won two out of three last vreek and moved into a four-way tie for the Dixie Conference lead. Against St. Andrews on Wednesday the 49'ers ran away in the last few minutes for an 82-74 victory. The team placed four men in double figures. Norris Dae chipped in 21 followed by Sandy Bunce with 17, and Ben Basinger and Pete Donohue each with 15. Rebounds told the story, as the 49'ers chalked up a 47-25 advantage. Surprisingly, it was Sandy Bunce, a guard and playmaker, who led in that category, compiling 15 rebounds. Norris Dae followed with 12. Friday night against Weslyan, the 49'ers led all the way, much of the tin« by ten points. Newcomer Larry Reid pumped in a career-high 20 poinU to lead UNCC over Weslyan 85-71. Pete Donohue had 18, Ben Basinger 17, Norris Dae 14 and Jim Turpin 12. Saturday night the team travelled to Fayetteville to play Methodist College. The 49'ers dropped a tough 77-70 decision, despite an excellent night from the field. The cagers outehot Methodist 30-27. Foul trouble gave the advantage to Methodist though, as they converted 23 of 29 from the line. Methodist only committed 7 fouls altogether, 2 in the second half, which proved to be the deciding factor. Norris Dae led the team with 15 points, followed by Ben Basinger with 14, Larry Reid with 12 and Jim Turpin with 12. The loss dropped the team's record to 8-4 in the conference. However, College of Charleston also lost, leaving the 49'ers tied for first. The Methodist victory moved its record up to 8-4, while St. Andrews vron and also moved up to 8-4. The Saturday night action pushed four teams into first place in the Dixie Conference. St. Andrews will clash wi^ Charleston next Saturday which will eliminate one or the other. Methodist has two easy victories ahead. The 49'ers, playing Greensboro College tonight at home and Lynchburg on Saturday here, should emerge with tvw) victories. Then if all goes as it should, UNCC will remain in a three-way tie for first place in the conference. Homecoming Saturday For the first time in its history, UNCC will hold a summer basketball camp for boys age 10 through rising high school seniors. The purpose of the camp is to teach and develop the basic skills of the game. The daily program will consist of fundamental skill sessions, films, lectures, team practice and league games. The camp staff will feature outstanding head coaches in college and high school, insuring high quality professional instruction. In addition, outstanding college players will serve as counselors. The cost is $85.00 per wieek. This includes room, meals, insurance, T-shirt and awards. For further Information concerning the camp, contact Coach Bill Foster at the UNCC Basketbell Office. The UNCC 49'ers will play their second annual homecoming game on Saturday, February 14, against Lynchburg College. The game will start at 7:00 P.M. in the Harrisburg Gymnasium. The Homecoming Queen for 1970 will be crowned at the dance scheduled for 9:00 P.M. The dance will be held in the cafeteria. Nominations for queen have been received by all male dubs on campus with the final dedsion to be made by the basketball team. The dance will feature nxisic by the "Showmen" who recorded "39-21-40 Shape." No admission will be charged to students and their dates.
