Page 10 THE CAROLINA JOURNAL May 13,1970 From The President’s Desk doesn't value student opinion in the slightest. In response to Dr. Ellis request that my request for the earlier publishing date be put in writing, I have introduced a resolution in the Student Legislature stating this request and the reasons for it. By Alan Hie hack The faculty and administration of UNCe usually act in the best interests of the students. Much of this column is devoted to some instances in which they are not. THE EXAM SCHEDULE On Monday, May 14, I visited the office of Dr. Seth Ellis to discuss the publishing of the exam schedule. I was curious and concerned as to why the exam schedule was published so late in the semester. Dr. Ellis, in a conversation that was cordial, at least at the outset, explained to me that his office has to determine the number of graduating seniors in each class. The classes containing the most graduating seniors are then put first on the exam schedule. I admitted that his was a good idea, but asked if this information, or at least a good approximation of it, could not obtained a few weeks earlier. Dr. Ellis said this would be somewhat difficult and inquired as to the purpose of this request. I explained that many studente would like to have it to plan for vacations; and still others would like to begin studying for their first exams. In response to Dr. Ellis' belittling the idea of studying early for exams, a student who had just entered the office stated that she had already begun studying for her exams. This student, whose name I do not know, gave perhaps the most important reason for an earlier publication of the exam schedule. Dormitory students are requested to vacate the dorm twenty-four (24) hours after their final exams. These students must arrange for transportation. Out of state students must purchase plane tickets. 1 told Dr. Ellis that I felt these reasons easily justified the earlier publication of the exam schedule. Dr. Ellis told me that he did not feel that this was justified and, in essence, told me he would not do it. By this time the conversation was no longer cordial. I told Dr. Ellis that I felt like I had been "beating my head against a wall." Dr. Ellis then replied, "As Student Body President You Had Better Get Used To Beating Your Head Against A Wall!" 1 am shocked, appalled, and disgusted by this attitude of a top administration official. It is quite obvious that Dr. Ellis YOUR DIPLOMA The class of 1970, at the beginning of this past year, decided that they would like to draw up a new diploma. A committee of seniors was formed to do this, and their recommendations were presented to a student-faculty diploma committee formed at the request of Miss Cone. What happened on this committee was no less a scandal! The faculty members of this committee were members of a former diploma committee and knew, or at least should have known, the requirements that a diploma must meet. Yet, these members let the committee draw up a diploma that did not meet the requirements (namely having to do with the wording.) By the time this error was discovered, it was too late to submit another proposal. Why change the diploma? If you have to ask that, they you haven't seen the present one. It is the dullest, blandest, diploma I've ever seen. Where do we go from here? Although the administration is bent on keeping the original diploma, which they feel is representative of the "modern university," they have agreed to have several designs drawn up for student review. Among these will be one similar to the senior class proposal, with the name of the university arched at the top, emblazoned in gold with the seal of the university, and printed in old English script. As a word of warning on this matter, we do have a fight on our hands, for the administration does not want the diploma changed. I promise you that your voices will be heard if you will only raise them! THE FALL SCHEDULE OF COURSE The new schedu!e of courses for the fall contained a very distressing note. The departments of Education, Business Administration, Economics, and Math did not list the names of the instructors for a single course. The English department omitted the instructors' names for about half of their courses. I find this particularly distressing in the light of the course evaluation to be implemented next year. Considering that actual registration is not until the fall and, believing that the students have the right to choose their instructors, I have introduced a resolution in the Student Legislature urging the posting of the courses with the instructors' names on the departmental bulletin boards and further urging the departments to identify the instructors in the future schedules of courses. VOTE The new University Constitution will be up for a vote Thursday and Friday. This represents one of the most progressive forms of university goverance in the country and I urge you to vote for it. Do you agree with the resolution that passed both the faculty and the Student Legislature concerning the extension of the war into Cambodia? You will be given a chance to vote on this same resolution in the Thursday-Friday referendum. Let your voices be heard. Vote! Bulletin Board rVlor.
