Thursday, March 18, 1971 The Carolina Journal Page 3 Alpha Delta Pi goes national The Zeta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi marked the culmination of its pledgeship on February 27, 1971, as it became the first national sorority chapter at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The weekend began with an informal reception for the national officers and guests on Friday evening. The impressive installation was conducted Saturday with a formal banquet that evening. Miss Maxine Blake, Grand President of Alpha Delta Pi, presented the chapter president Gloria Brown with the charter during the banquet. Other guests at the banquet were Mrs. Hoyt Shore, Province President; Dr. William Mathis, Dean of College of Humanities; and Dean Dennis Rash, Dean of Students. The weekend activities ended on Sunday with the sisters attending church together. Later that afternoon a tea was held in the Northwest Lounge. A dance at the Barringer Inn that evening wound up the celebration of the newly-installed Zeta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. State). For the Rational behind this, I suggest that Mr. Hensley look at the activities programming at these two institutions, which is about ten times better than ours. The Activities Fund at N.C. State Was almost identical to ours this year, but State had one big entertainment group after another. This is why 1 proposed a feversal in philosophy-I AM Tired of sorry programming. Finally, Mr. Hensley’s reference to Charlie Sitton, (I suppose he meant Charles Sutton) Was indeed in poor taste. Mr. Sutton was a great help in the "'riting of the Judicial section and Hie Bill of Rights in the Constitution. Mr. Sutton is now engaged in a severe and strong effort to stop the towing of cars around the Residence Halls-perhaps the only student at UNCe who is trying to do something about it. There were, no doubt, many changes needed in the proposed Student Constitution. The Student Legislature has held open ucarings on these matters and have made these needed changes. It is now the time for decision. '^•11 we stay in this bed of ^ediocrity, or will we use our Student Activities Fee to the ‘ullest extent possible to bring ^nic life on this campus? I’m for a change. BEANS From New York performing in the basement of Sanford Hall this week through Saturday, March 20th. Time is 8; 00 to 10; 00 P.M. Only 50^. Students not notified of new constitution On March 10th, Alan Hickok President of the Student Government Assoc, presented a new constitution to the Student Legislature. The constitution itself brings in many new concepts for progressive and more democratic government. The problem is that we as students were only given one week to review the document. This in itself, is almost an impossible task for the legislature to do in one week. There are too many revisions that should be by susie sutton- ■ by ed wayson made to the new proposed constitution to have it past in one week. The students as a whole were not notified of a new constitution until Thursday when the Carolina Journal had one article by the S.G.A. president on the major changes made, to help the students; and a notification of a Rules Committee public hearing on Monday, March 15th. It is ridiculous to assqme that all students who would have I’m getting married, too! O daughter dear, O daughter mine, why do you never call? I know that there’s a telephone in the middle of your hall. 0 daughter sweet, O daughter, love. Your voice 1 long to hear. Each Night 1 wait and wait and wait. Call, You’ve nothing to fear. I’ll send you all my money in dimes. I’ll send you all my love. I swear I’ll give you anything before I’m called from above. You used to dial and talk and talk when you were here at home. O my darling can’t you see, 1 just want you on the phone. Mother, Mother, what can I say, I love you dearly too. And every night 1 try to call, believe me for 1 do. At 6,1 sit and try to dial, but nothing do I hear. I jiggle and jiggle the hook of the phone, and only one thing is clear. The phone are damned! The Lines are Jammed till no one knows what to do. While I'm writing. 1 may as well say, I’ve got some very good news. The boy I dated through Myers Park is married with two kids. The phone system is lacking much A new one’s coming soon. That’s what they said in ’68 Five years ago, this noon. Yes One last thing before I close A promise of good cheer. I’m getting Married Thursday night. Think you can be here? questions could make that meeting. Secondly, the Judicial Committee supposedly held an open hearing on the constitution last Friday, March 12th, there was not enough advanced notification to reach the Student body in general and how could revisions and objections be processed in one meeting! I myself am quite dismayed over the procedure followed by Alan Hickok and Charles Sutton who wrote the constitution. To me this raises the question, that there is a conflict of interest on Charles Sutton’s part since he will probably run for President of the S.G.A. He and the original draft of the constitution is heavily orientated toward executive control, and this presents to me an area of conflict of interest. The constitution itself should have been reviewed if not written by a committee that represents all student concerns. I am not saying that Alan Hickok and Charles Sutton are not capable of writing a good constitution. What I mean is that a more representative and responsive constitution could be developed by a constitution committee whose specific purpose was to write a new constitution. But since Alan Hickok has presented a new constitution, it should be reviewed by a committee set up by the legislature, which would hold public hearings and make revisions. The revised document would be presented to the Student Legislature on or before April 15th of this year. Then we might have an acceptable constitution to present to the students to vote on. The constitution in it’s present form, would set up a presidential dictatorship, with the President controlling the majority of appointments to the Student Superior Court and the Board of Directors of the Student Union. If this is the type of government Mr. Sutton wants in the future, I myself will file and run for President of the S.G.A., to oppose these undemocratic provisions of the constitution. I feel that with my experience in student government, that I could promote and protect student rights and interests. Please pick-up a copy of the new proposed S.G.A. constitution and read it as soon as possible. Write down all your objections and what changes you feel should be made, and then hand it to me, (Edward Wayson) or any other Student Legislator so they know how you feel about it. All Student Legislators have boxes behind the Union De)Sk, where recommendations can be left and picked up by them.
