SPORTS page twelve/the journal/october 18, 1971 Mauney takes golf honors Pre-season ends by henry wilson The 49er basketball team has already completed one phase of preparation for their opener on December 1. Pre-season practice, which lasted from September 10 to October 4, was designed to get the players in shape. The 49ers met every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the workouts which consisted of running, weightlifting, and agility drills. This concentrated one-hour workout included 50, 100 and 440-yard scampers and a mile run. All these events had a specific time limit which had to be met. Military and bench presses were done to increase strength in the players’ arms and shoulders, while 50-pound sandbags were carried up and down steps to increase leg endurance. Each day the 49ers were encouraged to improve their scores and times of the previous workouts. The coaches did this by grading the players from 1-10 on each event. Coach Foster was extremely pleased with the results and enthusiasm of these pre-season workouts. Everything is pointing in the direction of an even better season for the UNCC 49ers. ...Intramural scoreboard...
