Two portraits of the UNCC 49ers have been painted on the floor of the gym and the lanes and center jump circle have been repainted. The entire floor has also been re finished. Five sign painters in Charlotte were approached and all five refused to tackle the job according to Bill Hutchinson of the Athletic Department. Finally Mr. Guerra, a Cuban refugee agreed to the task, Mr. Hutchinson said. The 49er caricatures are on the north and south sides of the gym in green and white. The lettering “49er” is in gold. The lanes are painted green and the center jump circle is gold with “UNCC” emblazoned in green. The idea for the project came from basketball coach Bill Foster. The project took 195*/i man-hours of work according to Hutchinson. The basketball squad helped with the cleaning and refinishing. • by Charlie peek ...Intramural schedule... compiled by henry wilson Monday, Oct. 25 4:00 p.m. - Twisters vs. 3rd House ■ 5:00 p.m. - Lambda Chi vs. Rotaract Tuesday, Oct. 26 4:00 p.m. - KAPsi vs. AKPsi 5:00 p.m. - Pigs vs. Hockos Wednesday, Oct. 27 4:00 p.m. - Twisters vs. Hockos 5:00 p.m. - Engineers vs. Chi Phi Thursday, Oct. 28 4:00 p.m. - KAPsi vs. AKPsi 5:00 p.m. - 3rd House vs. 2nd House sports car club Understanding the local Grand Prix A few weeks ago, you may or may not have noticed the small signs that were hanging around the school proclaiming that the 49er Sports Car Club was having a rally on Sunday and you probably ask yourself what the hell is a rally. Well, for the benefit of those of less intelligence, a rally is a kind of auto race that is run on public highways and you don’t drive flat out. Confusing? You’re damn right it is. So let’s take it a step at a time. Firsf don’t think you need a sports car to enter the race; one year, a ‘64 Chevy sedan won a rally. Second, it takes two people to run a rally; one drives and the other navigates. One minute before you leave the starting line, your navigator is given your instructions which you are suppose to be able to follow. But if your navigator can figure them out, the Gods have smiled on you. by rick everhart To add to your troubles, you are to keep on a specific timetable. Arrive at a checkpoint or finish line early or late and you are penalized points for every second you are off your time. Miss a checkpoint and you’re out of the race, period. By-the-way, you’re not told where the checkpoints or finish line are; you have to find them. That takes care of a rally, but what’s a slalom? Slaloms also held by the SCC, are held in the E-f)arking lot. The club takes rubber pylons and sets up a race course and one car at a time runs hell-bent-for-leather around these and the lowest time wins. Also, there are five classes of cars so the ‘Vettes won’t be running with the VW’s, and there’s a lady’s class, too. So get your dad’s Nash and your woman and come out one Sunday when the Club is running something and have a good time. Journal plioto/bartholomew It’s called “flag” football, but the game usually involves a number of “tackles,” like this effort in a game between Lambda Chi Alpha and Chi Phi. With just a couple of games left in a short schedule, intramural playoffs are just around the corner. scoreboard...
