The 49ers hit for only 31% in the first half and, overall, only 37% from the floor. Any real difference in the two teams showed up at the foul line. UNCC hit for 15 while Baptist College hit only 8. Rick Dobson and Jerry Boggs were held to 7 and 9 points, respectively, while Terry Sloan paced the 49ers with 16. Harold Thames went 5-5 from the free trhow line and ended up with 13 points. The victory pushed the 49ers record to 9-6. Austin Peay next foe Austin Peay will invade the UNCC gymnaisum Tuesday, February 8, in a rematch of a December 4 meeting in Clarksville, Tenn., which saw the 49ers drop a 75-74 decision to the -Governors. A member of the Ohio Valley Conference, the Govs sport an even 7-7 mark through their first fourteen games. Shooting nearly 50% from the floor for the season, Austin Peay is paced by 6'7" junior forward Howard Jackson, averaging 19.2 points and 12.3 rebounds per contest. 6'9” junior center Greg Kinman is next in scoring with a 17.5 average, followed by 6'4" junior forward Eddie Childress, 13.5, senior guards Tom Santel, 8.8, and Lovie Fry, 6.6. Substitute guard John Reid is averaging 7.5. Austin Peay also lists West Charlotte grad Reggie Thompson as a reserve guard, averaging 5.0 points per game. The 49ers took the measure of Austin Peay twice last season by 86-84 and 73-58 counts, but the Governors got their revenge in the December 4 thriller at Clarksville, with Santel icing a 75-74 thriller with two free throws in the last five seconds. Bill Foster is hoping that his 49ers can retain the spark that saw them play their most aggressive game of the season Monday night against Loyola in New Orleans, as UNCC upped its season record to 10-6 with an impressive 71-56 victory. Basketball statistics by Charlie peek Through 15 games of a 25-game 197T'72 season the UNCC 49ers have emerged victorious in 10 of the contests, dropping 5 to Austin Peay, Miss. State, Oklahoma, Valdosta State and Georgia State. All of these 10 wins were on either the 49er home court or in the Charlotte Coliseum. UNCC has lost only 2 games at home dropping the others on road trips. Only in New Orleans on Jan. 31, has the team been able to pull off a victory on the road. Through the first 13 contests of the season, in which statistics are available, Robert Earl Blue continues to lead the 49er scoring with a 23.7 average. Blue started a sparkling career at UNCC against Tusculum College in the first game of the season breaking an all-time one-game scoring record with 37 points. Other team field goal leaders are guard Jerry Boggs with a 11.8 average and senior Norris Dae with 12.7. Terry Sloan is just below the double figures column with 9.8. UNCC's team scoring average is 79.6. Sloan leads in field goal accuracy hitting 51 per cent of his attempts from the floor. Blue and Dae are leading in rebound averages with 6.6 and 8.2 respectively. UNCC's rebound average as a whole stands at 35.9. FRESHMEN The 6-man UNCC frosh have scored victories in 10 of their first 14 games losing twice to Furman, Louisburg and Sandhills Community College. Geoff Bommer, a Foster Recruiting prize is earing his scholarship, leading in both scoring and rebound averages with 23.9 and 10.6. Will Barnes has a 16.7 point average and Rick Haneburg 13.0. Haneburg also has a 10.4 rebound average and leads again in field goal accuracy with 50.4 per cent. The Frosh as a whole have averaged 83.1 points per game with 44.1 per cent field goal average. february 7, 1972/the journal/page nine SPORTS Sports shorts Donald MacKay's 49er Bowling Team stands at 0 and 3 after dropping two matches to Appalachian State University and one to the University of Tennessee. The bowlers lost once to Appalachian last semester. t On Jan. 22, at the North 29 Bowling Lanes, the 49ers met UT in the morning and ASU in the afternoon. Against UT, UNCC's high man was Sophomore Dick Reiman, averaging 181 for the 5-game match. The team average was 172 but UT edged them out with an average of 179. In the afternoon, the 49ers suffered another close loss, 179 to 173. Team leaders for the ASU match were Freshman Jimmy Furr averaging 194 and Junior John Lindgren with 187. The bowlers' next match will be Feb. 10 against UT again. They are slated to enter the ACUl Tournament on Feb. 11 and will go up against Clemson University sometime in March.
