Chi Phi victor in football playoff By Jim Dedmon Page fifteen!Carolina JournaUNovember 28, 1978 This past Thursday saw Chi Phi win against 2nd House Moore in flag football after a 2nd House protest. Accor ding to the protest, 2nd House had the ball with approximately one minute left. QB Steve Hall dropped back to pass, faked right and threw to Herbie Hall who was running down the left sideline. Hall caught the ball and was wide open for the apparent score. Gene Davis, an official, blew his whistle and indicated a touchdown. However, hall kept on running because he was not in .the end zone as the of ficial had thought. But the ball was ruled dead whether the whistle was blown inadvertantly or not. The questions which come to mind are: 111) If the ball had not been blown dead, would Hall have still been able 1 to score? (2) Since the ball was blown dead should the score still count? (3) If the score does count, how much . time should be left on the clock? The committee which Newell House Nursery 1 mile from UNCC on Old Concord Rd.210 Horticultural Advice & Low Prices Grand Opening Special “Dorm Proof Plants” Dracena Marginata — “Dragon Tree” Fiscus Robusta — “Rubber Tree” decided upon the protest was made up at the beginning of the season and has one represen tative from each of the five leagues. The com mittee decided the score would be counted and the Moore players would have a chance to try for the extra point and 50 seconds would be alloted for this attempt. If the extra point to tie the game would be good, then the two teams would go into overtime. The major points that should be brought out are the Chi Phi defender did follow the runner from 2nd House into the end zone and try to pull the flag on the Moore runner’s belt. This is as per the protest. Regardless, one play would decide the UNCC intramural men’s leagues championship. The 2nd House QB took his team to the line of scrimmage just as he was stopped by Chi Phi screaming for a time out. The purpose of which was to psyche out the 2nd House team and break their concentra tion. Unfortunately for Chi Phi this tactic works both ways for on the next signals, the 2nd House team rolled around the left end on a sweep. The running back had the Chi Phi end beat and scored the extra point. The score was tied 7-7. Now the 50 seconds of play would become crucial for both teams. Chi Phi started the series of downs with a pass that was in and out of the hands of the in tended receiver. 2nd House had put a good deal of penetration on the QB but not enough to block the pass. Time was running out so the 2nd House QB dropped back twice in an attempt to hit for a long bomb but failed both times, risking a very close interception on the first attempt. After the second pass fell in complete time ran out and Chi Phi won the toss to see who would get the ball first. On the first play Chi Phi’s QB dropped back to try to hit a receiver again, ano again the fine play of the Moore team was tough but not quite tough enough as a short pass to the flats brought a seven yard gain. The next plays showed a r • short pass to the flats, variation of running -- mixed with smart pass- ing attacks that brought some good gains but never scored. 2nd House opened the next series with a QB op tion which was read well by the Chi Phi defenders and showed no forward movement. The next down caught the defense off guard as the 2nd House runner took the ball up 12 yards through a gaping hole left open by the defense. But the Chi Phi defense was not one to be taken for a free ride again as the 2nd House pass attempt on the next play from scrimmage was thwarted. The Moore gridders countered with pass completions of five and 10 yards. However, the Chi Phi “D” kept the opposing attack from scoring and forced the 2nd House team to punt. Chi Phi started their offensive machine roll ing with about a 15 yard gain on a draw play up the gut. The hole was large enough for the run ner to maneuver and achieve some needed yardage. The Chi Phi’s then took a sweep play for big yardage which took them from about the 45 to the 2nd House five. Chi Phi was ready to wrap it up after a tackl ing penalty on the Moore team brought the goal line. Chi Phi’s QB then decided to drop back and unleashed a - House player, but could What followed looked not hang on, and it final- hke a Tampa Bay upset Jy came to rest in the turned into a Chi Phi hands of the originally win. The ball was tipped ' first by a 2nd House Sports Specks By Jim Dedmon As stated in the last issue of the paper, basketball is upon us. The last final intra-squad scrimmage over with, Coach Mike Pratt and company are ready to head off into the regular season. The first game against Mississippi should be a good one. Both teams will be getting over their first game butterflies and will probably look a little rough at first. But as the game continues, it looks like a very good pairing. In this issue of the newspaper, the center section is dedicated to the Lady 49ers basketball team. So far the team looks good and should have some great games. However, the season for the 49ers is hardly a pushover and has some very stiff competition. Early in the season, they have already faced na tionally ranked N.C. State. Some of the other teams they will face include Catawba, Virginia Tech, Wingate, Pembroke and, of course, Davidson, on Jan. 8 in the Charlotte Coliseum at 5:30 p.m. So far the women’s team has not received nearly the support the men have in the past. Some of the troubles include such publicity problems as when they play doubleheaders at the Coliseum before the men and they cannot even get the local radio sta tions to announce they will be playing. In the area newspapers, they receive bottom bill ing to high school teams, something very few col leges have to put up with. This year’s season outlook so far is promising and it would be great if the fans who support the men’s team would equally support the women. Basketball for women may not be as fast as it is for men, but competition is competition no matter how you slice it. It is a great chance to see some good ball and to enjoy the game. So far the attendance has been mostly parents and a few fans. Hopefully, this will change with the upcoming season. defender who lost the ball, which then fell into the hands of another 2nd intended Chi Phi receiver.
