Page twelve/Carolina Journal/April 12, 1979 Coming of age through introduction to philosophy (continued from page 9) when he o™™, to. . • 1 / (continued from page 9) As history advanced beyond the Golden Age of Greece, different phi losophers, or their exten sions, came into exis tence. It has been said everyone has a right to his own philosophy. Epi curus said, “Let no one when young delay to study philosophy nor when he is old grow weary of his study ... We must then meditate on the things that make our happiness seeing that when it is with us we have all but when ab sent we do all to win it." A modern day philoso phy is known as existen tialism which was ad vanced by Jean Paul Sartre. It holds each man exists in a purpose less world and he must oppose his hostile en vironment through the exercise of his free will. Philosophy is a way of looking at the world and the philosophically as tute person is equipped to try philosophies on until he has found one which fits him. Philosophy to our class was a mental stim ulant. It caused us to think. Kant said the good life is doing your duty. It is our duty to do things that are right. It must underlie our rela tionship to all human be ings. Thus ethics, which means doing the right and good thing, is a part of philosophy. Our class learned that, as a nation, our philoso phy may be hidden but if we are to maintain our freedom and our moral authority in the world, it is essential we become aware of the nature of philosophy and the social power it is. Wet Willie coming for Jam-Up Grand LeMans Conquers Space (continued from page 8) Boys, Grand Funk Kail road, Frank Zappa. Bad Company, Lou Reed, the Grateful Dead, Sha Na Na and the Spinners. Manorisms, their la test album, is, to borrow a phrase, a “slightly more sophisticated mon ster" than the Wet Wil lie albums of the past. The music remains cha racterized by the feel and strength of the vocals, but the 10 songs on the album depart from the “stomp stuff" of earlier years toward more melodic material. It s more the burgun- dys than the blues, say the Willies. During the Jam-Up Festival the Loco-Mo tion Circus will perform between scheduled bands. Their repertoire in cludes accordian accom paniment to the juggl ing of flaming torches, balls, boxes, as well as to Chaplinesque slapstick comedy drama; Mechan ical Man Mime sketches; two and three man Ada gio Hand-body balanc ing and acrobatics; a display of a choreo graphed unicycle ballet; pratfall clowning; com edy, and a message of health. The Loco-Motion Cir cus appeared on ABC's "Wide World of Sports” Saturday night special from the Montreal 1976 Olympics. Their high velocity show is educational and fascinating with the va riety of characters, props and comedic movements. More information on the scheduled events for Jam-Up will be announc ed as soon as UPB final izes arrangements. LeMans was our 1978 sales success, and it's been refined for 79.
