Poge Z THE CHARLOTTE COLLEGIAN October 1, 1953 CHARLOTTE COLLEGIAN Published monthly throughout the school year by the students of CJIAKLOTTE COLLPXiE, Charlotte, North Carolina. Staff Editor Acting Business Manager Faculty Advisor Gleen Keever Jim Gunnells Miss Mary Denny Charlotte Collegian Extends Welcome The Charlotte Collegian wishes to extend its hearty best wishes to you freshmen who have registered and are em barking on your first years of college. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy your work at CC. There is much to be gained, and we know you will profit from your stay here. If there is anything which you are not sure about or need help on, feel free to call on any member of the faculty or your student officers. They will be more than glad to help you. We have many activities at Charlotte College, and we hope all students w’ill participate in some of them. Anyone who has a desire to do work on this paper w'ill please get in touch with the editor. We assure you any help would be appreciated. Your first few weeks here will probably be your hardest. So if you feel you don’t like the college life the first few days, just remember the first is always the hardest. We are going to try to make Charlotte College grow, and to do this we need the help of everyone. So know that we are glad to have you and wish you the best of luck. GLENN KEEVER ELECTION SOON At the beginning of each new year, we have a lot of new students who are seeking information. As chairman of the Elections Committee, I feel that you will become more familiar’ with not only the Student Government activities but also with the elections procedures by reading your Student Hand book thoroughly. From your reading you will learn how the Nominating Committee is selected and its duties. Along with other interesting information, you will find the general quali fication of candidates and how a person is nominated and elected to office. So again I urge you to read your handbook and be familiar with these activities. Just as in a national election, where different view points are expressed through political parties, it is the same here at CC. From these individual ideas there are formed political parties which carry out their point of view. This may seem odd in a college, but the student learns the principles of politics, and this activity arouses school spirit and stimulates interest. Since the .sophomore officer.' were not elected last year, the election will be held October 13. Along with this the election of the business-manager of both the annual and the paper will be held. Nominations for these offices should be in not later than September 30. Freshman class officer elections will be held in the first week in November. I would like to encourage the Freshmen to be thinking about members of their class to fill those offices. There is a great, need for the students to take part on the different committees, but I would like to say that if anyone is interested in elections committee work to please contact me. I certainly will welcome any help that is offered. MARJORIE LOTSHAW El Club Espanol BY MARTHA STOGNER Perhaps some of you have been sleeping this summer, but the members of the Spanish Club haven’t. They have really been busy, with two big events of the summer. First, of all, the club got to gether one night during the sum mer at the home of Vilma Ray for a water melon cutting. You should have seen how many mem- ers turned out for this affair! We had a wonderful time, seeing each other after so long a time. It was at this outing that the club de cided to take an “excursion a las montanas.” So, on a Sunday morning about three weeks later, we were once again reunited at seven o’clock in front of the “Maid.” From there we went in a caravan to the moun tains of the “Old North State,” guided by Rudy Thompson, to a lovely, secluded spot disturbed by only about 50 people a year! (This year will go down in History!) You’ve never seen a more beauti ful mountain stream! We had the time of our lives ten miles down a steep, dusty, mountain trail, swimming in an icy stream; after wards came a picnic dinner, and then more swimming and just rest ing on the rocks or bank. We had a nice crowd that day, too, with seven or eight guests. Nora Leza brought along an adorable friend from Cuba, whom we enjoyed having. The weather was perfect and the trip was a howling success. So, with our apple cider in hand, we departed late that afternoon for home and another year of school. Free Fun For the general information of the students of CC, here are some facts about the Latta Park Recre ation Center: Bruce McNeil and Charlotte Laclara, directors, have annoifnced that a young adult group is in the process of forma tion. This group when organized will meet each Thursday evening, A variety of entertainment will be offered: volley ball, basketball, ping-pong, and other indoor sports. Student nurses and collega students are being especially in vited to take part in these games. Also being organized are dancing classes under supervision of Bob Sullivan. Each first and third Sat urday evening dances are held at the center. A representative from Charlotte College has been re quested for the dance committee. Submit SSCQT Applications Now Applications for the November 19, 1953 and the April 22, 1954 administrations of the College Qualification Test are now avail able at Selective Service System local boards throughout the coun try. Eligible students who intend to take this test on either date should apply at once to the nearest Selec tive Service local board for an ap plication and a bulletin of informa tion. Following instructions in the bulletin, the student should fill out his application and mail it imme diately in the envelope provided to Selective Service Examining Sec tion, Educational Testing Service, P, 0. Box 586, Princeton, New Jer sey. Applications for the Novem ber 19 test must be postmarked no later than midnight, November 2, 19.53. According to Educational Test ing Service, which prepares and administers the College Qualifica tion Test for the Selective Sei'vice System, it will be greatly to the student’s advantage to file his ap plication at once, regardless of the testing date he selects. The results will be reported to the student’s Selective Service local board of jurisdiction for use in considering his deferment as a student. English Club Why not an Enlish Club at Charlotte College ? There are clubs already established that are devoted to the Spanish and French language, and a fraternity, Sigma Pi Alpha, which welcomes any one interested in any foreign language. Shall we lovers of English be out done! An English Club could be a very constructive and worthwhile activity. If anyone is interested, just leave a note to this effect on the bulletin board. Sports Perhaps thi.s is much too soon to be thinking of basketball, what with the world series still to be played and football on the rampage, but we feel that Char lotte College should have a win ning basketball team this year. It's not too soon for jou bas ketball players to be limbering up at the YMCA. Perhaps a group could get together and begin working out. This would help out a lot when practice does start. Watch for a notice on the bulletin board.
