PETS ARE PEOPLE
Sometimes I wonder who gets
the laup:hs out of the relation be
tween a pet and his master. I even
feel that the pet may be the master
in many cases. This essay may
help me to prove a point.
Having a pet in this day and
age is a serious business—and an
expensive one. In order to have a
pet such as a parakeet, as I do, one
must buy a cage. The bird w'ill
probably fly iti complete freedom
all over the house, l)ut you must
have a cage. How else would you
bring him home from the pet shop?
The pet store will also furnish,
at a slight extra fee, a book on
Hoic to Raise Your Bird. This hook
will tell you that a special gravel is
necessary for your bird. So you buy
this gravel, sprinkle it carefully
over the floor of the cage, and sit
back to watch your bird grow
healthy. I have found that buying
gravel is useless. There is no use
sprinkling it over the floor of the
cage, because the bird will never
be there. My bird is more interested
in picking sand from the soles of
my shoes that picking it up from
the floor of the cage.
Also suggested by the book are
numerous toys for birds, which can
be bought at almost any store for
about one dollar. Don’t buy them.
The bird will have more fun stand
ing in front of a mirroi- for hours
at the time, or he will find more
enjoyment in tearing up a news
paper than in all the bells you can
l>uy.
If you want your bird to be
clean, a plastic bathtub can be
purchased. This tub fits on the
front of the cage door, and offers
an excellent view of the room. But
nine chances out of ten, the bird
will find a dirty frying pan full
of greasy water in which to enjoy
the ritual of bathing.
The parakeet is supposed to be
come more attached to one member
of the household than to any of
the others. He is said to pick the
kindest one. I disagree. He pays no
attention at all to my wife, who is
by far the kindest member of my
family, and he notices me only
when he walks through my plate
grabs a handful of feathers every
time he gets within range. When
she is asleep, he gets lonely. What
does do? Naturally! He wakes her
up. Until those little hands are
pawing the air trying to catch him,
he cannot be happy.
Even though he causes much
trouble around the house, my
family could never part with my
parakeet. After all, he is the mas
ter of my home.
GOSSIP OF C. C.
Well, this month we are short of
gossip so there will be no hang
ings or shootings. My spies had a
hard time finding any news. It
seems that the word has been pass
ed around that anything you say
(except to your best friend) will
be printed in the paper. Oh well,
we’ll get someone to talk yet.
We heard that Slade Joyner was
real disappointed when he didn’t
have to stay in the hospital after
breaking his foot. We wonder if a
certain nurse named Shirley had
anything to do with his wanting to
stay at the hospital.
•Johnny Culp and Rea Hinson
have formed a bachelor’s club.
From what we hear .Johnny won't
be in it long because he has all the
girls snowed.
The girls around C. C. keep their
love lives a big secret. We did
hear that Kanela is interested in
a very cute young man. We won
der if a certain boy from Virginia
has been keeping Martha Voyles
company during her illness.
Don Trapp seems to have school
work as his only interest but we
wonder
If you want to know how to
make true love run smoothly just
ask Louella or Bill. They are ex
perts on the subject.
Since we don’t know anything
good or bad about anyone we will
just sign off for this month, but
everybody better watch out next
month because we plan to have a
long long gossip column so we will
see you then.
RECORD ROUNDUP
Well, here we are back with you
once again with the “Record Round
up” of the month. This seems to
be another successful month in
the field of popular music. Still
leading the way is the late Johnny
Ace’s stimulating waxing entitled
"Pledging My Love.” Running a
very close second is the “Happy
Otto Medley’’ by Johnny Maddox.
Caterina Valiente, the up and
coming artist for Decca, does a
truly sensational job on “THE
BREEZE AND I.” Georgie Shaw
seems to have hit the jackpot with
his new one called “I'll Step Aside.”
Our boys, the Four Aces, have once
again reached the top with their
interpretation of “There (Joes My
Heart.” Betty Johnson, a Charlotte
girl, has made a big smash with
her R.C.A. "Victor recording of “Be
A Love.” Nat King Cole displays
his usual brillance as he does a ter
rific job on “THE SAND AND
THE SEA.”
Les Baxter makes a strong come
back with his instrumental
recording of “Unchained Melody.”
Jaye P. Morgan seems to be the
talk around town once again with
her new record of “Softly.” Also
on R.C.A. 'Victor we see Perry
Como getting into the limelight
once again with his latest waxing
entitled “Door of Dreams.” Joni
James goes to bat for MGM with
her new version of “Close Your
Eyes” backed by “It May Sound
Silly.’’ Still going strong is
“Earth Angel” by the Penguins.
This just about winds up things

DINNER FRENCH STYLE
On Saturday evening, March
19th, the Charlotte College French
Club enjoyed a most delicious meal
at the Chez Montet of the Hotel
Mecklenburg. The members of the
club had expressed the desire to
experience a typically French meal.
Our menu consisted of Coq au vin
(chicken cooked in wine), thick
gravy, rice, salad with French
dressing, French bread, onion
soup, and bisque tortoni for dessert.
The meal was served French style,
and we had the word of an expert
that the only item missing was the
wine appetizer.
After dinner entertainment con
sisted of four humorous anecdotes
nairated by Dr. Pierre Macy, the
Club Advisor, two very excellent
song selections by Merwin Foard
accompanied by Mrs. Macy, and
group singing. The affair was
quite successful, and the desire was
expressed to make such a dinner an
annual tradition with the French
Club.
New members are always wel
comed into this group, and you
need not be studying French to
join. If you are interested in our
group, contact Dr. Macy in Room
for the “Record Roundup” of the
month. We pick Caterina Valiente’s
recording of “The Breeze And I”
as the new record most likely to hit.
Until we see you again next month,
remember to play it cool and keep
listening.
