Poge 4 THE CHARLOTTE COLLEGIAN December 16, 1955 ODE TO AN AUTO Now, me and my wife and my little brother Joe Took off in a Ford for San Pedro. We hadn’t much jjas and the tires were low But that doKKone Ford would get up and (?o. Now, it come along about the mid dle of the nijfht And we were battin’ it along like white folks might When a Mercury behind blinked his lights and tooted his horn As he flew out of sight. Now, we had twin pipes and a Columbia rear And I’d reckon you’d think it hard to steer; Now, for you folks who ain’t dig- gin’ the jive That’s two carburetors and over drive. Now, we made grease spots out of many a town, We left the cops spinnin’ round and round. They wouldn’t chase, they would just run and hide For me and that Mercury stayed side by side. Now, I looked down at my lovely bride. Her face was blue and I thought she had died. My brother was pale and said he was sick. Said he was almost a nervous wreck. But I didn’t care for what the beck Me and that Mercury stayed neck and neck. Now, on through the desert we did glide, A flyin’ low and a flyin’ wide, W’ent through towns obout forty feet wide Me and that Mercury side by side. Now I looked in my mirror as I heard somethin’ cornin’ I thought it was a plane by the way it was hummin’. It was comin’ along at a terrible pace And I knew right then it was the end of the race. As he flew by I looked the other way. The guy in the Mercury had nothin’ to say. It was some kid in a hopped-up Model-A. OFFICERS ELECTED In a recent election Pat Kendrick and Johnsie Greene were elected to the offices of Secretary of the Stu dent Council and Business Manager of the Charlotte Collegian, respec tively. Good luck to these girls in their work. CHRISTMAS PROJECT Charlotte College has received a letter asking for aid from needy Colleges and Universities in Asia. These people asked for help in se curing text books and pamphlets which they can use in their studies. The books should be based on tech nical matters and the conditions of the books do not have to be perfect. The Student Council has dis cussed this problem and has come to the conclusion that it would make an excellent project during the Christmas season. This project will help many foreign students and will bring a more friendly spirit be tween the United States and for eign ountries. If anyone has any books that he does not use, we urge him to turn them in to the office. They will then be shipped to the places where they are most needed. Again we would like to emphasize the fact that technical books are needed. If you are in doubt about technical books, bring your books and let the office decide. Also don’t bring funny books and pocket sized fictions; these people don’t need that kind of an education. Seriously though. I’m sure that we can help in some small way. Let’s get the Christmas spirit a little earlier this year and bring some books. FRENCH CLUB The Charlotte College French Club began its year by having a wiener roast on October 29 at Dr. & Mrs. Macy’s home. Mr. Merwin Foard and Dr. Macy entertained with solos. The club members sang some French songs and French records were played. We were proud to have many new members to en joy this most enjoyable social. The following have been elected as officers of the French Club: President, Mr. Merwin Foard; Vice-President, Miss Jane Ann Car michael; Secretary-Treasurer, Miss Joanne Hovis; Social Chairman, Mr. Barney Lisk. Plans are now in the making for the Christmas Social. All members are looking forward to another gay evening together on December 10. Membership in the French Club is open to all students who take French at Charlotte College. The French Club meetings and parties proved to be very profitable and interesting last year, and even a bigger and better year is expected this year. FUTURE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Since we are in the middle of exams at this time we cannot call this a future event. Perhaps some thing that you have been looking forward to more than exams has been the Christmas Dance that will be presented by Charlotte Col lege on the 20th day of December. The Christmas Dance is the only event of the agenda for the con clusion of this quarter. We want to make it the biggest and best that C. C. has ever had. This will be quite hard to do if you don’t come. If you are planning to be present, it would be advisable for you to be there early because of the large crowd that is expected. By looking back at last year’s dance we can predict a sellout. It’s going to be a great event. So, I’ll leave by say ing, see ya’ there. OWL'S ROOST REPORT Lacy Saunders has reported that the Owl’s Roost is finally in the black. For the first few weeks of business the Roost has taken in $72.1(i with an expense of $65.21. Mr. Saunders said that the reason for the high expenses was because supplies could be bought cheaper if they were purchased in large quantities. He explained that he has bought some supplies, such as hot chocolate, which will last for many more weeks. The problem that Lacy wanted to discuss was that of a salary. The Student Council unanimously approved that Lacy should have some of the profit. The Council and Mr. Saunders agreed that 50 percent of the profit would be given to him for the supervision of the Owl’s Roost. The remainder of the profit will go to the school. BACK OUR ADVERTISERS The Collegian would like to take this time and space to say thanks to our advertisers and also to urge the students to patronize them. First, we would like to mention the Coca-Cola Bottling Company for giving us their ad. I'm sure that everyone will drink a cool and refreshing Coke sometime in the future and will think of their con tribution to the world of refresh ments. I also want to thank them for putting the names on the bot tom of their bottles. Next, we want to thank Plaza Motor Company for their more than generous ad. We’re sure that this establishment will receive busi ness through their ad in the Col legian. The Central Drive-in is known for their good food. Visit the Drive- in and see for yourself. C.C. REPRESENTED ON T V. I suppose that by this time every one knows that C. C. has two tele vision stars in our midst. I am of course speaking of Jerry Gaudet and Buddy Smith. Jerry and Coach Smith were the guests of Big Bill Ward on his W.B.T.V. sports show. Bud and Jerry were interviewed by Mr. Ward about the basketball team at C. C. this year. They did a fine job of promoting interest in the ball club and also for the school. Jerry is a reliable, lanky, and dead-eyed forward for the Owls who has done a great deal in build ing C. C’s team. He graduated from Central High School in 1954 and is in his second year at C. C. Jerry was the second highest scorer in the league last year and there are hopes that he will be up around the top again this season. Good luck to Jerry, Bud, and the other night Owls. MORE ABOUT BASKETBALL The C. C. Owls, under the super vision of Buddy Smith, have been hard at work these last few' weeks. They have had several practice games. Although none of the con ference games have been played at home, all the practice games have been played in the Piedmont Gym. The Owls would appreciate greatly the support of all the students. Although we have lost the first three games, we feel sure that we will break out of the slump soon and start a winning drive that will carry us all the way to the tourna ment. Coach Smith says, “I don’t mind getting beat by a better team, but I feel that we have one of the best in the conference; and there fore we should not have been beaten.” With a coach that rates his team so high, and the fine matei'ial we have on our team, something has to happen. The spirit of the team is the highest it has been this year. So, when the Owls take the court in the confines of Piedmont Gym, let’s all be there to give the Owls our support. MERRY CHRISTMAS The Members of the Charlotte Collegian Staff want to wish every Charlotte College student a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Be sure to attend the Christmas Dance on December 20. W'e’ll be seeing you next year.
