Page 3 THE CHARLOTTE COLLEGIAN March, 1956 BASKETBALL FACTS AT C.C. It was leained not lonji' ago that Buddy Smith, ('hai’lotte (’olleKe’s basketball coach, miRht not return next year. This is a j^reat blow to all students involved in athletics at C.C. Althoujrh Buddy’s record at C.C. is not sensational, what other coach could have done better under the same circumstances? There was surely no other coach in the leag'ue more respected by his players than Buddy was. He taught good hard clean basketball all the way. With every defeat it seemed to take something out of him, but the next game he would bounce back with even more encouragement. He always had the spirit and never once gave up. It was only two years ago that Buddy was a member of the Green ville baseball club, where he played first base. He led the Tri-State League in batting for most of the year and finally ended up by hit ting almost 300. We pass on a story that our coach used to tell us. Says Buddy: "While I was at Greenville we were battling for first place with Ashe ville. At that time everyone in the city was our friend. We would be offered free meals, could get into the shows free, and we often re ceived gifts. Everyone had a smile for us and everyone was more than friendly. Howevei', towai'd the end of the season we went into a terri ble slump. We went straight to the cellar. At this point the people would not even speak to us. No meals, no shows, no nothing was offered us. In fact, they even brought tomatoes or something siniiliar out to the ball park and threw them at us." Thus Buddy concludes, “When you win you win with everybody, but when you lose you lose alone.” How true this statement is. Of course, it may be that the students at C.C. are tired of having a loser. But the fact still remains that C.C. will probably never have a winner unless they change conferences or change their policy toward ath letics. Some of the schools in the conference give as many as ten or eleven scholarships for basketball per year. All this plus regular practice, training rules, regular times to eat and so on makes a team. Then, also the students are behind the boys. In the game play ed at Wilmington, both C.C. and ((’ontinued on page 4) RECORD ROUND-UP Well, hi there, anil here we are aK'ain with what’s tops this month on the air and in the juke boxes all around the country. Well let’s Ket the ball rolling- with a hot one. It’s a matter of discussion whether the record should be called "the devil is a woman”, the devil is an omen”, or “Lovely Lies”. Of course, the title is “Lovely Lies”. Whatever you may wish to call it the fact is not changed that it Is one of the hottest platters making- the circuit this month. Your beliefs on the name of this record may be fully explained because the voca lists on this disc are from Africa, yes I said .Africa, and their Enfflish is limited. Someone has given us a hot tip that there are a couple more hot discs to keep an eye on. These are Billy Eckstine’s “The Bitter with the Sweet” and Frank Sinatra’s “FI owe IS Mean Forgiveness.” We’ve heard both and they seem to be what the public wants. While speaking of Frank Sinatra by the way, he’s not such a bad actor just as he is a great vocalist. If you have seen his current picture you will probably comflrm this state ment. We’ve been listening to several of Jerry Southern’s records during the past weeks and have come to the conclusion that she should rank among- the top female recording stars of the day. All her tunes are quick and simple little ditties with a sentimental background. Watch this girl because one of these first days she’ll get the right record and will set the record shops buz zing. It has been quite a long time since we’ve heaid anything- from the Hilltoppers but now this group has come up with a new recording which promises to be a large sel ler. We’ll wait to see if our prog nostication is correct. This column would not be comp lete without mentioning one of the most popular stars of the record ing world today, Elvis I’ressley. There is a varied opinion of this fellow but this column gives him our vote. He has a mixture of hill billy, popular, and rock and roll styling-. We are going to go out on a limb and predict that he will make a million. (Dollars or recoids). GOLF TEAM PROPOSED Since the basketball season has concluded and athletic events are a thing of the past, there has been talk around the school of foi-ming a golf team. The people that want a golf team say that it can be a success with the school’s assistance. They say that the golf team was a success last yeai- and that it can be again this year. We believe In the stuff we are handing out, in the firm we are working- for, and in our ability to get results. We believe that honest stuff can be passed out to honest men by honest methods. We believe in working, not weeping; in boosting, not knocking; and in the pleasure of our job. We believe that a man gets what he goes after, that one deed done today Is worth two deeds tomorrow, and that no man is down and out until he has lost faith in himself. We believe in today and the work we are doing, in tomorrow and the work we hope to do, and in the sure reward which the future holds. We believe in courtesy, in kind ness, in generosity, In good cheer, in friendships, and In honest competition. We believe that there is something doing, some where, for every man leady to do It. We believe we are ready right now.
