Geology Class Visits Caves ! CampusCut-Ups
Will Be May 16
By JOHN BALLARD
CnUeyian News Ediior
(i:00 A. M. Saturday the third
of May found members of Dr.
Heck’s Geology 41 class gathered
at the Ringside Grill ready to de
part on another of Dr. Heck’s
famous excursions.
The trip underway, we had as
our first stop the McKinney Feld
spar Mines near Gooch Gap, N. C.
We observed the open pit mines
and watched mining operations as
they were being performed. The
feldspar is used in the making of
pottery, china, and cheap rubber
goods.
Lunchtime found us feeding our
faces with picnic lunches. We
stopped in Bluff City, Tenn., for
this delight. Wiley Martin was
, noticed taking seconds and thirds
of most items, especially the fried
chicken. After lunch we pushed on
to our main objective in the trip,
a limestone cave about five miles
outside of Bluff City.
This cave, a non-commercial one,
was about three quarters of a mile
in length. We took our flashlights
and had our oldest clothes on for
this underground trek. Emerging
two hours later we were covered
with mud, especially Ann McRorie,
who seemed to get into every mud
hole. Then we went on into Bristol,
Tenn., to the Sunset Motel, where
Bristol for a movie and returned to
we cleaned up for dinner. Several
people in the party went into
the motel for a welcome night’s
rest.
Sunday morning we got up,
nursing our sore muscles, and had
breakfast at the motel. We then
headed back toward Charlotte. The
Cranberry Iron Mines were our
next stop.
These mines are inactive, but we
found out that they are to be re
opened in the future. We roamed
in and out of the shafts exploring
the workings. Our next stop was
Linton Green’s Mineral Shop in
Spruce Pine, N. C. Here we saw
many native minerals and rocks
that have been gathered by Mr.
Green over many years.
The Assembly Committee an
nounced Wednesday, May (>, that
the 19.')8 Edit^ion of the Charlotte
College Camjjus Cut-Ups will take
place in the Piedmont Junior High
School auditorium on May Ki, at
8:15 P.M. The Cut-Ups, a musical
variety show featuring local ama
teur talent, was originally pre
sented in 1047 under the direction
of Mr. David Littlejohn, then a
student of the college. Mr. Little
john is factulty advisor to this
year’s show.
Students of Charlotte College
will be admitted on presentation
of their activity cards, and tickets
for guests will be sold for fifty
cents.

Orleans theme. Don Baxter and
