Poge 4 THE CHARLOTTE COLLEGIAN April 14, 1959 From The Exchange List BY SAM BELL ColleKian Exchange Editor Spring is here, and with it a new quarter, new courses, spring fever, and dull columnists. Please bear with me. The Emory Wheel of Emory ColleKe, has as its slogan “the most independent college newspa per in the south.” I concur. It is really refreshing to read a college publication where the students are left so much on their own to ex- I>ress their ideas. Many times oth er factors enter into what can or cannot be printed. Hats off to the Wheel for keeping alive the right of Freedom of the Press. Myers Park has selected Harry Golden as their commencement speaker. In my opinion, they could have not made a better choice. The most interesting assembly program we have had this year was Mr. Golden’s. Charlotte has many fine speakers under her wing. I would like to see more “local talent” on the program at assemblies. It would be a pleasant change from the classics to hear a speaker who just talks, or some music that can - PROFILE - is to promote local facilities that will be of aid to family life pro grams. Golf, boating, and fishing take up most of the little spare time Mr. Thornton has. Boating is perhaps his most intense activity in the way of hobbies, and to hear him tell of his cabin cruiser is pure delight. In connection with his boating, he has begun making model boats. Mr. Thornton, commenting on his reasons for liking his teaching, says, “It is not only a very pleas ant break to get away from peo ples’ problems, the students also are a .sharp group. They really keep you alert.” SOPHOMORE bumper? (That is expected, though when the ones with the “WWW’s” are dashing for the next filling sta tion! Information on WWW can be obtained from any member of the Geology class.) Thanks to Miss Collins for sup plying the cover for the Spring Parnassian . . . and Congratula tions to her brother on F.D.C., III. Girls ... I know a single ex sailor over here for the first time this quarter who said, “How about a little boost for my circulation?” Initials: T. D. Last. But Not' Least: Where did the name “The Maid” come from ? (In reference to the grill across the street.) be understood without a course in music appreciation. Have you heard the shortest poem in the world? FLEAS Adam had ’em. Ogden Nash. Note to Miss Baker: You thought my spelling was bad. You should see the man’s we are reading in English three. His is ridiculous. Someone at the University of Detroit broke into the student Continued Column Sf. - KILGO - A pet theory of mine is that we are like “human sponges.” Rela tively speaking, you are now a rather “dry sponge,” absorbing knowledge and the ways of life. You not only are absorbing know ledge in the classrooms, but also absorb a little of theory, person ality, and character from contact with the different students you see each day at college. Then, your education, your personality, your character is reflected by the method in which you “squeeze” yourself. A college education helps you to develop the right method. In short, a college education is definitely beneficial to you in any walk of life. If nothing more, it helps you to appreciate, to question, and to understand. I know, it is hard at times. But it could mean the difference of life —or living. - RICH I could not answer the question. Into the night I walked, a very confused person. * * * What wise one said, “Things printed can never be stopped; they are like babies baptized, they have a soul from that moment, and go on forever?” 4: >t> If you want to hear a really lousy record, give a listen to the tear-jerker some money-hungry person has waxed about the death of “The Big Bopper” and his two cohorts. It’s just my opinion, but this recording is an excellent one to throw away. * * * I say “Phooey!” on these unco operative people around here who refused to give my reporters any news. It seems that the students found that they could buy four minutes of silence from the machine. Sounds good, but they would charge us with break ing and entering over at “Louie’s.” I end with this thought. Spring has sprung, the grass has riz, W'here last year’s reckless driver is. Johnny Mathis’ Open Fire, Two Guitars is coming up fast. Columbia is apparently getting rich off of Mitch Miller and His Gang. Because of the huge success of Sing .Along With Mitch and More Sing Along With Mitch, the label has cut a new album called Still More Sing Along With Mitch. If the demand keeps up, the next package could be titled Even Still More Sing Along W ith Mitch. Memorial albums for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper have been released on Coral, Del Fi, and Mercury, respectively . . . Joni James has never sounded better than she does in her album of Hank Williams’ songs. Her wist ful voice is perfect for the melan choly ballads but seems slightly out of place on such songs as “Janibalaya.” Harry Belafonte gets better with each album. His new one for Vic tor, Love Is A Gentle Thing, gives him a chance to do the folk bal lads for which he is so well known ... To hear the best phrasing in many a day, listen to Keely Smith’s new Capitol album Swingin’ Pretty. For that breathless feeling, lis ten to Julie London’s London by Night. After one spin you’ll never understand why Jack Webb di vorced her. Last, but not least, for those of you lucky enough to own stereo sets, RCA is having a special pro motion where you buy one album at the regular price and get an other for only one dollar. This brings the price down to the same as monoral.
