At Mel bourne, Sylvia contributed heavily to the U.S. women’s team effort which rung a total of 94 points and 11 medals. She swam third in the 400 meters for her bronze medal and Rained a silver medal by swim ming on our second place 400-meter freestyle relay team. Continuinjr her assaults on the record books back in this country, Sylvia set a new world mark in the 440-yard individual medley of 5:08 during one of the heats of the women’s indoor championships in April, 1957. She subsequently cap tured the event in one-tenth of a FIRST UNION NATIONAL BANK Open Your Savings Account With Us. Member of Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. But, hold a piece! From the deep dark depths of obscurity comes the sound of the “Man of America”— the private eyeball, namely Peter Gunn. Not only did the single sell a million, but I’ll be ding-donged if the album isn’t somewhere near that mark. And lo, what to my won dering eyes do appear—“More Music From Peter Gunn”. Even brothers managed to get into the act. The phenomenal King Cole (currently riding “You Made Me Love You”) saw blood-brother Earl Grant steal some of his light with “The End”. Louie Prima and Keely Smith grabbed off an extra large slice of revenue for “That Old Black Magic”. And now for the feature we’ve all been waiting for—The Merritt’s Musical .Awards of 1958-59 (ta, ta. - WENTZ - Sunset Strip” on Warner Brothers. It also has a big hit in it called “Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb.” With top music in the pres ent sad situation it is, this will probably become No. 1 on the drip parade. If so, I should like to thank everyone who voted, to thank those who put their check by my name, and to congratulate the oth er new Student Council officers and the new Sophomore class officers. Graduation is here and some of our favorites will be leaving, and “after three years it’s about time,” as Fred Collinis says. Bet you thought I was going to get serious about the whole deal. I am. We freshmen and perpetual students shall surely miss all those who are lucky enough to be getting their C. C. diplomas and “moving on.” Congratulations, good luck, and much success. — Picnic Thoughts Pictured above is the Collegiate’s nomination for the Unsung I'nsung Hero of the Year, the one and only Fred Davis Collins, Jr. This crew-cut president of ('harlotte College's Sophomore class will graduate al (he end of this quarter, but is undecided about plans for next year. Fred, an employee of the Charlotte Observer advertising depart ment, is married and (he father of a baby boy. In his career at Charlotte College, our man Fred has devoted much of his lime to Student Council work, in addition to .serving two terms as Business Manager of the Collegian. A member of Phi Thela Kappa, honorary scholastic fraternity, Frt'd is also a member of the Writers’ Club and rt“cently was brought into Sigma Tau Sigma, honorary social .science achievement fraternity. He has worked quietly in his stay, receiving very little acknowledge ment for his achievements. For this reason, we offer the title of Unsung I’nsung Hero of the Year, .\lthough he didn't quite make it in the race for City Council, he is a cinch to cop this honor; he’s the only nominee. In closing. I’ll say that a good time was had by all, or by me, anyway. I know I’ve closed, but I’ve de cided to add a bit more along the soapbox level. Bear with me, please, and understand that I have en joyed my first year at CC; how ever, I have noticed one thing throughout this year: the students don’t seem to become very well known to each other. Some really inspiring people who could become wonderful friends to many others know but a few individuals during their hours spent at the school. The answer, I feel, lies in the activities we have, such as the pic nic. At our activities we have vast opportunities to make friends. I’m saying all this in my own clumsy style in order to get across this: I hope, in the days and years to follow, the events of interest will be given good and well-sup- ported publicity. I sincerely hope the students will then merit this advertising by coming and enjoy ing the fun of knowing each other. There I said it and I’m glad; and you’re glad that I’m through. "/IW The Latest Record Hits” Parker Gardner Co. 118 W. Trade ED 2-8257 - EDWARDS - taking a closer look at the quali ties of the group. The freshmen have furnished new members for clubs, new voters for elections, new candidates for elections, new appetites for the Owl’s Roost, new parking prob lems, and new grey hairs for many professors. They have caught on quickly to the college routine— come to class, take notes; go home, study; wake up in the moring, study; go to work, study; home from work, study; back to class, take notes. They have come safely through term papers, rain, ab sences, piano concerts, and lectures. They are essentially a very sounl and sane lot. So, as you can see, the freshman class is quite capable of handling the problems of CC next year. One need not guess why I am of this opinion. You see. In August, at the outloors in Houston, she established new Amer ican and championship records in the 880 (10:45.8) and in the 4-10 (5:49.4).
