THE CHARLOTTE COLLEGIAN
JANUARY . 1963
C.C. Withdrawing
From Conference
The Virginia-Carolina Athle
tic Conference has lost another
member. Charlotte College with
drew from the Conference this
season, leaving only three mem
bers--Chowan, Louisburg, and
Wilmington -- to battle for the
conference title this year.
Heading the reasons for with
drawing is the impending addition
of a junior year to Charlotte
College and a desire to begin
contacts with schools on which
athletic relations will depend
on the future. Travel problems,
which kept Charlotte a distant
member of the league, strength
ened the decision to withdraw
from the Conference.
The Conference was organized
in 1958 and was composed of 9
Pep Rally
Is Lighted
Charlotte College’s parking lot
was well illuminated last Friday
night as the 49’ers swang into
their second pep rally of the
year. High fiames and a rising
spirit sparkled in the cold dark
air while students danced and
sang around the bonfire.
Several students, dressed as
49’ers, raced from the woods
with flaming torches and started
the fire. "When the Saints Go
Marching In” rang out over the
gravel lot, turned into “Oh, My
Darling,” and died briefly, only
to be turned into a combination
bunny-hop and snake-dance.
Winding up the celebration,
the cheerleaders managed a par
ade of cheers requiring plenty
of group activity and participa
tion.
Standing by, the Newell volun
teer fire department manned
their fire trOck to prevent any
danger from the fire to the sur
rounding area. The Engineers
Club lent their learned capabili
ties to the school spirit as they
took complete responsibility for
the fire building. The Student
Council and the cheerleaders
carried the load of planning and
publicity.

members: Campbell, Presbyter
ian, Frederick Colleges, Ed
ward’s and Oak Ridge Military
Academies, and the present four
member schools.
In 1960, Campbell, Presby
terian, and Frederick expanded
to 4 year schools, thus becoming
ineligible to remain as members.
In the same year, the two military
acadamies withdrew for other
reasons.
This loss of 6 naembers leaves
the Conference with very un
certain predictions for the future.
For effective competition, an or
ganized league must have a min
imum of three members. If one
of the remaining member schools
withdraws, the Conference will be
disolved.
Fan Tabs
There were two of them, faded
pants, colored shirts and vests,
sleeves rolled up .showing their
long underwear, boots and cow
boy hats. Two men who showed
enough interest To participate ^n
CC’s limited athletic program
and to attend the games.
In front of the lounge there are
approximately five or six posters
stating game schedules and other
events. 1 stood the re one day and
asked several students this ques
tion: “Coming to the game to
night?” The answer: “What*
game? I didn’t know there was
one.”
Later in the day I heard a
student complaining to his friend
about the lack of spirit at Char-

lotte. I wonder if either of them
can read and participate!
My thanks to the 20 students
who attended the game at Park
Center last Jan. 3 against Kings
College. Observing them as they
remained standing during the last
10 minutes and screaming at the
top of their lungs, I only wished
that the other 1000 students of
CC were having as enjoyable a
time.
Fans from the College of
Charleston totaled 15 girls. By
the way, there we re 15 Charleston
boys playing on the court. Love
works in many ways.
49’ers Lose 3 Players
Charlotte’s Cagers have added
five losses to the scoreboard,
holding only one win for the
season.
Losing three players has de
pleted the squad to nine, leaving
only four men on the bench.
Circumstances such as having
three men foul out in the Kings
game certainly show how serious
a handicap a depleted squad can
be.
Experience is showing re
markable improvement. The hard
competitive spirit of the team
has kept CC fans standing during
the final minutes of the last sev
eral games.
Kings College provided a rough
game for the 49’ers, withseveral
men fouling out on bofh teams.
Close playing against Warren
Wilson kept an even score until
just before the, half. The final
minutes boosted a rally, which
cut the Warren Wilson lead in
half, leaving Charlotte with an
eleven point loss.
Difference in height placed our
cagers second againstAsheville-
Biltmore with a final score of
111-76,
St. Andrew’s five met with
difficulty on their second match
against Charlotte in Garinger’s
Gymn. Theil- second victory
was not as positive as the first
one.
A stinging loss of two points
was placed in Coach Edelman’s
lap by the College of Charleston.
The final score, after a beautiful
comeback by Charlotte, was VO
SS.
Winning scores for other op
ponents were: St. Andrew’s 80-
62, Kings College 76-66, and
Warren Wilson 70-57.
