Since therr return from the tour
nament in Florida the Charlotte
College 49ers have been an up and
down ball club, sometimes looking
like a first rate college team and
on other occasions like a YMCA
recreation club.
In the first game after their re
turn on Thursday, Jan. 14, the 49ers
ran North Carolina Methodist right
out of the Garinger gym with an
astounding 110-84 score. Wally Mc-
Glnty and Tommy Gilliam scored
23 points apiece to lead the 49ers
to their sixth straight Dixie Con
ference victory.
A strong first half which left
Charlotte leading 61-39 ait the half
assured the 49ers of a victory. The
entire starting five finished in
double figures. McGinty and Gil
liam were followed by Ronnie Rob
inson with 19 and Charlie Jacobs
and Jimmy James with 13 and H
respectively.

Pembroke came next and caught
Charlotte cold in an away game
Saturday, Jan. 16. The home team
gave the 49ers their worst beating
of the year with a tally of 95-54.
The 49ers hit only 25 per cent of
their shots from the floor while
Pembroke hit twice that many. The
49ers just never got in the ball
game. They trailed 47-22 at the
half.
Charlie Jacobs was the leading
scorer for Charlotte with 22 points.
Ronnie Robinson and Tommy Gil
liam had 12 apiece.

Lynchburg fell to Charlotte 77-
70 on Tuesday, Jan. 19, in an away
game as the 49ers padded their
Dixie Conference lead to two full
games.
Jimmy James poured in 21 points
to lead the 49ers scoring and help
pull Charlotte from a 43-43 halftime
tie. WaiUy McGinty added 20 for the
travelers.

On Monday, Feb. 1, Belmont Ab
bey traveled to the Garinger gym
only to be defeated the second time
this season by the 49ers. Final
tally found Charlotte leading 82-78.

LAURINBURG — In spite of a
25 point performance by co-oaptain
Charlie Jacobs plus four other men
in double figures, Charlotte lost
last Friday night’s game to St.
Andrews 91-85.
Both teams hit 41 per cent of
the shots from the floor. But St.
Andrews collected heavily from
the foul line and dominated the
boards to hand the 49ers their first
conference loss this season.
(At the time this paper went to
press the record stands 14-8 overall
and 8-1 in the Dixie Conference.)
The first half was rather nip and
tuck with the visitors getting nip-
ned the most. They were behind
48-42 at halftlme. In the second
half, the home team decided to
play keepaway and wound up toss
ing free throws.
All five of St. Andrews starting
five tallied in doubled figures. Lar
ry Taylor led with 20 points.
Jimmy James was second high
for Charlotte with 14 points. Tom
my Gilliam had 13, and Ronnie
Robinson had 12. Bobby Lemmond
came off the bench during the
second half and scored 11 points.

Pembroke State College became
the only team to beat the 49ers
twice this season, Tuesday, Feb.
9, in the Garinger gym. Hot streaks
midway through the second half
propelled the Braves to an 84-68
victory.
The loss left Charlotte’s record
at 14-7 overall and 8-0 in the Dixie
Conference. Pembroke is now 14-8
for the season.
The visitors held a 36-31 lead at
halftime, but the 49ers came back
to cut the lead to 54-53. Then the
Braves really got hot and moved
to a commanding 19 point lead.
Jim Gallagher led Pembroke
with 21 points. Three other Braves
scored in double figures.
Charlotte was led by Charlie
Jacobs with 21 points. Tommy Gil
liam added 19 points for the losers.

The 49ers got sweet revenge for
an easiy season loss to Asheville-
Biltmore in a cliff hanger the fol
lowing night by handing the Bull
dogs a 71-70 defeat on Charlotte’s
home court. (Charlotte lost the
first game 84-70).
The first half saw the lead switch
hands many times with Asheville
holding a one point 35-34 lead at
halftime. The 49ers got a nine point
lead with about three minutes left
but had trouble pulling it out. Ron
nie Robinson was called on to hit
some crucial foul shots in the clos
ing minutes.
Charlie Jacobs led Charlotte with
17 points. He was backed up by
Tommy Gilliam with 16.

Presbyterian handed Charlotte its
sixth loss of the season on the Blue
Hose home court Thursday, Feb.
4. and avenged an earlier loss to
the 49ers by thoroughly whipping
the visitors 116-71.
The 49ers made many errors, but

, and Larry Lindsey, No. 21,
it seemed their worst mistake was
showing up for the game.
Tommy Gilliam was high for the
49ers with 21 points. Charlie Jacobs
added 17 to the losing cause. Jimmy
James and Ronnie Robinson had
13 and 11 respectively.

Presbyterian 61-55 116
Perhaps the most important
game of the season was the one
with Wesleyan at Wesleyan Satur
day. Feb. 6. Charlotte won the
game 79 to 57 and with it clinched
the DIAC Title, with an 8-0 con
ference record.
Charlotte scoring was led by
Ronnie Robinson who poured in 29
points on 11 field goals and seven
for eight foul shoots. Charlie Jacobs
added 22 and Tommy Gilliam 12
toward the winners' cause.
Meetings Set For
Tennis, Golf Teams
Anyone interested in playing on
the Charlotte College tennis team
is asked to meet in CU 210 at 3
p.m. today Also, those interested
in playing golf on the school team
shO'Uld meet at 2 p.m. in the same
room.
Schedules for both sports include
six away matohes and six home
matches. Opponents will include
teams in the Dixie Conference as
well as Belmont Abbey. Pheiffer,
Western Maryland, Pembroke, and
Erskine.
