Wc are sorry to learn that our oiu. inenu o. otirewait got one or two ribs broken a day or two agoi, Il-e was firing his engine and had a stick ot wood to strike his side. Married at Forest Hill Tuesday eve, by Key. Mr. Bumpass, Mr. Thos tarter to Miss Missouri Jordan. May their life be pleasant. Key. John II. Wyse of Soutii Car olina, late graduate of the Southern Theological Seminary at Philadelr phia is visiting Rev. S. L. Keller, pastor of St. James church. Receipt cooks will be sent to all the officers of the Fair Associa tion, for the purpose of selling sea eon tickets. Every body should buy a season ticket now in order to help on the association. The Sunday school convention of No. 11 township will meet at Zion Church, at. 10 o clock a. m., Tues day August 7th. All those inter ested in the great work of Sabbath schools arc cordially invited. j The St. John's Grange will hold a basket picnic at their grounds at St. John's on the Second Saturday in August. It is hoped that both old and young will be present and make the occasion a pleasant one. We regret to chronicle the death of Mrs Prather, wife of our citizen Mr. Prather, of Brown Bro's livery. After many years suffering by that fell destroyer consumption, she has gone to her rest. It is our painful duty, this week, to chronicle the death of Mil lard Barriiiger. Only a few weeks ago we announced the death of Mrs. B . Truly each one gives to the be reaved family their heartfelt symT pathy. A number of our citizens went over to Charlotte to take part in a Democratic rally and hear Hon. D. G. Fowle, who spoke there at night. Our next Governor draws the crowd wherever he goes, and never disap points them by giving them a poor speech. Mr. Ed Fisher presented us Tuesday with a kitten that had a full developed body and a. head that in all particulars save the mouth was perfect. The kitten had three mouths, three tongues and six lips. It was a curiosity, but we did not . save it. We regret to learn that Mr. J. S Harris , one of our most promi nent citizens, was taken quite ill Tuesday at the depot just before the train arrived. He was brought to the MorrisITouse and so far recovered durkig th; afternoon as to be sent home. We hope that ere this time he is in usual health. The house, barn aud outhouses of Mr. Burt Furr's Brewer place was burned last Tuesday morning. The loss to Mr. Furr is very serious. He not only lost all the buildings, roughness, grain, oats, etc. stored in the buildings, but in addition nine bales of cotton. There is no doubt that the fire was incendiary. The Fair -Association held a meeting last Saturday. Messrs M. L. Brown and Linn Erwin were put on the committee to hare the track laid off and completed, and it was ordered that season tickets should be sold for one dollar each. See the Vice President of your township or any other of the officers of the Fair Association and buy one. The monotonous calm was dis turbed yesterday eve by the capri cious conduct of one of Mr. Corl's ponies. When they attempted to ride him over the macadam road he would persist in taking charge of the pavement to the imminent danger of the permanent "settlers." Fin ally the pony ran off to the stable and the orginal calm prevailed. Our friend Will Misenheimer escaped narrowly with his life on Wednesday. He was superintend ing the working of a power feed cut ter, when his clothes became entan gled, and but for the band slipping off he would have been cut to pieces. As it is his left leg was fearfully torn about the thigh; Dr. Lilly was speedily called and dressed the wound. Now he is lying comforta ble, but has a dangerous and pain ful wound to care for during these hot days. The R. &. D. R. R. Mr. Wat Atkins, the efficient book keeper and manager of R. A. Brown's popular store, is takiug a summer recreation by the sea side. lie will visit Wilmington and other points. Our friend Jno. W. Fink now wears a neck tie decoration, ten rat tles and buttons from a visible rat tle snake killed near Piedmont Springs. Is He the Murderer-or Mr Freize.r A clerical looking colored individ-. ual was yesterday arrested by the police in this city, upon the state ment of Mr Will Litaker, a citizen of Rowan county, who said that he identified him as an escaped mur derer. Hit name is Dick Sloan, alias J. H. Morrow, and he is charged with the murder of Mr Freize, in Rowan county, a couple of years ago. He was tried for the crime, but was acquitted upon the insanity plea, and was sent to the insane asylum, frcm which institution he shortly after wards escaped. Morrow has papers showing that he is pastor of a colored church in this county. He was locked up foridentification. ThevSalisbury officials telegraphed that they want a man of his discription. Charlotte Chronicle. . 1 - I; Another problem about as villinous as that concerning the hen and a half has been propounded. It is this: "A tells the truth three times out of four; B tells the truth four times out of five; C tells the truth 6 times out of 7. -What and B as sert aud C denies?' Burlington (Kan.) Republican. FROM THE DIFFERENT TOWNSHIPS Dote f'roiu Flyler. We learn that the new store at Mr E. Eudy's mill will be completed at an early day. Mr. C. P. Cox & Co., of Mt, Pleasant, will occupy it when completed. There was a light shower of rain fell here on last Thursday. Corn and cotton is looking very well con-, siderirg the long dry spell. Wheat threshing is about oyer. The average crop, is" about one half, while there is a large crop of oats. There will be prayer meeting at Friendship church on Thursday night, S. BlooresylU Dots. We. are dry; have not had any rain for more than six weeks ihat would do much good to the growing crop. Corn in this section will be short this season. Cotton may make an average crop if it rains soon. Wheat is turning out with us about half a crop. Our old friend, Mr. J. E. Frieze, of Mill Hill, spent Sunday week with us. We. are always glad to see John. Mr. W. A. White, of Concord, was with us last Sunday, his wife returning home with him much im proved in health. Uresweiis springs are very popu lar,, there are about SO visitors there now. ine young people, oi Moors mi i m ville had a moonlight picnic at the springs last Thursday night. It was largely attended and enjoyed by all, especially by your correspondent. Mr. Joel Reed's family, of Con cord, are spending the summer months at Creswell's. Also Mr. D F. Cannon's family, of Concord are there. Misses Nanuie McKey, Whittey Connelly and Sallie Culp, three of our young ladies met with a sad ac cideut one day last week while out driving. Their horses became un manageble, ran off upset the buggy and threw the young ladies out, bruising them badly though not se riously. Poitic3 are very quiet in our town now, though we are Democrats to the very core. Cleveland and Fowle men to the core is the kind of, stuff we are. Heath visited our town on the night of the 14th, and took from our. midst Mrs. Dr,., McLelland from us. She leaves a husband, four children and many friends to mourn her loss. She was loved by all who knew her. The Standard is indeed a newsy paper, and long may it send the news abroad. R. S. A Bad Sign. An old fellow who was running a sawmill down in tha Southern part of Tennessee had considerable trouble in getting a man who. under stood the business of sawyer. Fin ally, when the owner of the mill had become wholly discouraged, a res pectable fellow canje along and ask ed for a situation. He showed a pa per from, one pf the leading millinen in the countiy, stating that the ap plicant was one of tne best ol saw yers. He was engaged, and when he had been at work about three weeks the proprietor called him one morniDg and said : "Mr Collier, you needn't go to work today." "Aie you going to shut down ?" "Yes, sourez you are concerned?" "What, you don't want me any longer!" "Yes, that's it." "Why, haven't I been giving satis faction?:' "O yas, so far ez yo work goes." "ihen what is the matter ?" 'Well, I have noticed that you put on too many shirts." "I don't understand you." "Well, you change yo shirts too often. You have been workin' here now thaee weeks an notice that you put on a clean shirt about every eight doys." "But, my gracious, is there any thing wrong in that ?" "To some folks thar mouten't be, but thar is to me. A teller, came alonsr here once and changed his shirt every twelve days." "Well.'4 said the sawyer. ,fi what else did he do ?." "Run away and married, my daugh ter, that's what he done Then thai- come along a feller that changed his shirt bout ever ten days, ne run away with my wifs. Then another, feller that changed his shirt about every nine days. He run away with my pocket-book containing fifteen dollars ; so I find that the of 'ner man changes his shirts the worse he is, an' fearin' that you mout run &way with my mule colt, I recon you better go now, while I've got my eye on you." Several days ago a Scotch colly made his appearance in the town clerk's office. He placed his fore paws on the desk of one of the clerks and whined. Finally he laid a silver dollar, which he held in his mouth on the floor at the feet of the clerk. The dog was recognized as Jimmy Brown, ahe property of Prof. D. Cady Eaton, of Yale TJdiversity. t or several years Prof. Eaton has brought the dog to the town clerk to have him registered. This year he came with him as far as the front entrence, Ther he threw a coin upon the sidewalk and the dog picked it up and carried it into the town eieark's office. As soon as it was learned what the dog wanted his pa pers were made out and placed in ran envelope, which was given to him rnd in his mouth he carried them to his master, who was waiting for him outside the building. There are no parallel silk threads in the paper. The other counterfeit is $1 certificate, series of 1886, D,t of better general appearance than the other. The vignette is scratchy, and the words 'United States' have the appearance of a wood cut, the shading being very coarse.
