THE STAIIDM Friday, August 9, 1889. The Farm. ' taltNtt la hm Mfe. Aiurewayto make farm life in teresting and to stop the grumbling of boys ia to awaken in them an interest in the remarkable things in nature to be found on the farm. Hare one of the boji explain why grass ic dark green when it grows rapidly. Tell him clover is hot grass, and then hare him find out what it is. Give him the books to find out these things. The boys need some thing to thmk about connected with the intensely interesting operations of nature going on aroend them. Give them the means, as well as the opportunity, to learn all about them and the furrows will be shorter, the hot days will be cooler, the com mands to hone and cow more pleas ant, but just as impressive, and their faces will be drawn into handsomer lines and their thoughts purer ideals Elizabeth City Carolinian : Truer words hare never been spo ken The farm and farm life can and must be made attractive. Kerosene and lard, kerosene emul sion, potatowater and pyrethum were experimented with upon infested io imals tb past winter with the fol lowing results Kxbosxxs akd Laud Three parts of lard were melted in a dish; and then ne part of kerosene . was added, and the mixture thoroughly starred. With rag this was rubbed while warm, not hot, thorougly into the hair along the back of an infes ted animal. An examination the following day showed that all of the lice were dead. KxiosxKi EMUX8I0X An eight per cent, emulsion was applied to ten three year old animals kept in a barn. The application was made by using a small force pump with a few feet of hose attached and a nozzle. This method was ' found very desirable, as the application ooald be made more thoroughly, quickly and easily in this than in any other way. One man worked the pump, while two others with their finger tips vigorously ' "aham poeed" the animal as the liquid was forced into the hahr through the nos zle. The time required to treat the ten animals was fifty minutes, and the amount of theemnlsion required was less than eight gallons. When cloths were used it was found much more difflult to thoroughly wet the hide, as the hair would mat down and shed the emulsion. The next day after making the above applica tion r the animals were examined, and It was found that the lice were all dead: As an eight per cent, emul sion costs less than two cents a gal lon, and as it takes so little time to make the application, it seems need less that any. one should allow his stock to become seriously lousy. Potato Wats a A number of animals were treated like the prece ding; with potato water. Seven bushels of potatoes were covered with water in a large caldron, and boiled' until thoroughly cooked. The amonmt of water poured off the foiling was eight gallons. This was tued like the kerosene emulsion, ex ceptthat it was applied to the aai malt with a eloth, the water being too dirty to admit of the nse of the pump and nozzle. Examinations of the cattle the firgt, second and third Says after the application showed no 3ead lice bat plenty of .living ones. Aboufc two weeks after this 1- was ioldj the men that eared for the tack that th lice had nearly all dis appeared from these animals, and Ob examination I found such to be the -case. Capt JR. P. Bpeer, who requested that the above experiment should be inad'aayi he '. has repeatedly freed las young stock' of lice by two or three applications of potato water made at interrali of about one week. Thoae who use this remedy do not claim that it will destroy the eggs. Pure pyrethrum was dusted upon the back and neck of two young animals where the lice were very numerous. ' The following day the hair was full of dead lice, and no Eve ones could be found about the treated parts. - Of other remedies that are often recommended, probably a strong de coction of tobacco and a mixture o smlphur and lard are two of the best A solution of corrosive subli mate or a mercurial ointment will Mil the lice, but these are dangerous tawe. 1 1 Carbolio acid soap, sulphuret of potassium and ashes all have their advocates; end probably are useful In destroying vermin on domistic an imals, tyit I cannot speak of them from experience in this connection. .Leave your business unduly and Ypufcbwmesi wiu leave you.; A horse with a dishing face is cenerally eowdljr, and a wwardly ToTHl Editor Please inform your readers that I have a positive remedy tor tne aoove namea disease.
