GIVE US A TRIAL
SOME Til OUGHTS.
Maffgested by the Time, Condition
and Thing Looking Backward and
Forward.
Another year is almost gone.
'X mas Is near at hand. In a few
more dW Santa Glaus will pay hi
annuffNrjsitaud gladden the hearts
of thousands of children in onr
land.
The rich will exchange gifts and
in some instances ihe poor will be
remembered. Tbase dajs which
should be happy days to all will pass
so swiftly by thai we will not haje
time to stop and think before Jin
nary 1st, 1896 will usher, upon us
the beginning of a new year.
In many important aspects 1895
has been a
year of startling and
puzzling events : War rumors, riorsjr Cattle, $42,153,
murder, suicide and "a restless and
uneasy spirit seems to exist every
where. 51'he unprecedented revolu
tiotTin political sentiments in our
country, and now the pending crisis
between us and Great Brittain all
combine to emphasize the statement
that there is evidenly a spirit of dis
trust and dissatisfaction that is as
wide as the universe and as deep
seateJ aa bumatf prejudice, enyy and
ambition. '
Again: Januaiy 1st, 1896, will
find desolation, gloom ai.d poverty
in many howes where peace, plenty
and comfort abounded a year ago.
Men whose fortunes were then es
timated at millions are now penni
less and without" credit.
. As I write' the names of several
prominent -North Carolinians, who
for years and yeai e have stood at the
very 'bend of our leading financiers,
recur to my meuiory, with the Bad
asdb&aoa of tlie fact that one un
wise investment swept away the c-
p.mulations of busy lifetime and
these men whose favor and friend-.
f , ship were pcmed by people gener
- ally and who wt re held up to the
' young as exauipbrs of what thrift,
energy and en'.eiprise would acconi
pliab,- ere now seldom thought of
and leas frequently referred to in
public. I know men whom Brad
street rated a year ago at five hundred
thousand dollars, whom he now
rates as unworthy of credit.
But there is another side to the
picture, there have b?en colossal for
tunes made. Many wiio began 1895
struggling against tid, with an im
penetrable cloud overhanging their
future, haye with an indomitable
- will and a determination that
laughs at impossibilities surmounted
all difficulties and find -themselves at
the close of the year luxuruviug in
peace and plenty.
; January 1st, what an eventful day
to us all. Many will be trying to
balance their accounts. Some puz -zled
to know how to invest their
profits and many others wondering
how they can meet their obligations.
The man who baa had his fortune
swept away by. fire, or the farmer
who has lost his crop by flood or
frost ha j the sympathy of the pub
lie, and aid if necessary; but the
merchant who, bec-inse of inability
to collect accounts, or the heretofore
successful financier who hjs failed
because of an unfortunate deal, ia
held up as a failure and unworthy
of confidence or sympathy. He is
sued, reported to commercial g n
cies, collecting agencies, b'ack-mai!
ed and so completely handicapped
that it ib impossible for him to do
anything. There is many a dij
who could start again and with
past experience rise rapidly in tbe
ladder of success, but for judge
ments, commercial agencie3, etc.
I have seen comparatively few
debts collected by jadgement. In
moat cases forbearance and a little
timely aid will obtain money from a
debtor, where prosecution and perse
cution would bo cripple him that
the collection would be impossible.
At the close of tbe year 1895 let
there go -up from eyery heart an
anthem of praise and thanksgiving
for blessings received and enjoyed,
and petitions for mercy in behalf of
tbe unfortunate and distressed.
Coicord, N.O. "X."
Hystericus Disappearance.
A gentleman arriving here from
Southport yesterday said that Mr.

Brunswick county and a member
of the firm of E F Davis & Drew,
merchants, had mysteriously disap
peared and his whereabouts are un
- known. He conveyed bis property
toMrTFred Harper and Mr. E F
Davis, but-it was found that tbe
; property was already mortgaged for
" Tall value, to a . gentleman in the
country. Mr. Drew left home on
