A Sail Affair.
The sheriff of Yadkin county
passed through last night with two
prisoners for the penitentiary,- two-j
white women, ooe named 13-Jle Hold
brooks, about 40 years 6f e.ge, who
was given twelve months and v the
other, Mary Bates, aged 18, w8
given eix i'.on:ls. Thu two women
were tied toother with ropes and
looked very ad.
The charge brought against them
was for stealing; about ten cents
worth of bacon. But they broke in
a house to get it, which is a peniten
tiary offence. 1
We understand the women were
very hungry and had only three
cents worth of cakes given them for
their supper. A gentleman realizing
their need gave them a good, square
meal, which they seemed to enjoy.
This is brutal treatment, even a con&
vict should be fed properly.
