At Ebenezex, a colored people's
church near Bethel, No 10 township,
on Saturday night last, there was a
festival and the usual general row
among the negroes, which may re
suit more serious than was at first
expected. There are two factions in
the church, known as the upper and
lower sides, ,apd there are bitter and
hostile feehnsr between them. x It
seems that the "uppers" ,had, pos
session of the hall at one time, and
when Wilse Garland, an exiconvict
and a leader of the "lower" faction,
came up tothe door and af ter peep
ing through the crevices for some
time, h? poked his finger through.
In an instance the door was slammed
shut, and "Mr. Negro" was fast,
with his finger in the crack. Several
jumped on him then, cutting, shooU
ing rtDtl beating him. He was not
killed outright, but is in a bad fix
for recovery. About a dozen were
implicatsd, several more of whom
were cut, shot or brusied up.
Bill Littles, of the lower faction,
was arrested and taken before ,.Es
quire H O Cook on Monday for trial
and while arranging the witnesses,
Littles escaped and has never re
turned like the ship.
Seturday night, October 26, is a
memorable night to the colored
"featimet" supporters of no 10.
