A DARK-SKINNED HERO,
the Pickaninny Ht True Orit i
A pretty, yet pathetic, eight was
witnessed at Atlanta the other day.
As one of the trains from the south
rolled into the depot there aHhtd
from it a little white boy about ten
years of ace and a colored lad of 14.
Th latter's black face shone like
polished ebony, he had no legs,
one arm was gone, and he got along
by, using a crutch and hop piog,. over
the pavemei t like a rabbit. Ho and
his white companion seemed in the
best of epiritp. and whilo the latter
carried a small worn valise, the
former hopped oyer the pavement
in the direction of the Exposition.
Many Southerns knew them, for
their home wes in New Orleans, and
the negro boy, Moee, byname.iscne
of the heroes of the State. He was
found in the woods when a baby by
the mother of the whito boy, whose
husband was in the lumber and
Hvoa several miles above New Or
leans- She took the little pickan
innv home, treated him kindly, oven
affectionately, and when her own
son was born Moso became pus1
sionatoly attached to him. Finally
the husband died, and the widow
and the two boys lived on in the
swamns. One night tho river roso,
broke over the levee and swept the
mother and two boys out into the
darkness and the lloo.l.
Next morning the mother was
rescued by a fiwherman, and asoarch
then instituted for the boys. They
were finally found. The white child
perched on a slipoery log just above
the water, tho negro, Mose. up to
the neck in the slimy Hood and his
arms sustaining his young master on
his dangerous place. His exhaus-
tion was so great .that he nearly died
for whilo heroically struggling to
save the white boy ho had not
flinched whilo great logs bore down
upon him and crushed hi3 legs so
that they had to be amputated. Hie j
p.rm also was rendered useless !and
was cut off.
The black hero became so dear to
the heart of the mother that when
Fhe died a year later she left her
smaU property to the toboys, who
then removed to New Orleans,
where her .-cktives resided. Every
body there knows their story, and
as they pass along the street or sit
playing in tho squares many abagof
roasted peanuts, fruit, candy and
toys is given them by the passers
by. Tho relativts allow Mose to
have almost entiro charge of his
young master, and gave them per
mission to attend the Exposition to
gether. They attracted universal atten
tion there, and it is doubtful if anj
other two boys had so good a time
as Moeo pnd his companion Hick
