The followiug incident occnrrrd

in a r oral district: ;
It was the custom on the Sibbath
or the minister to read two lines of
he hymn to be sung, (tnere being
jut one hymn ,boos in the place)
the congregation then singing them,
the minister reading u wo more, the
congregation taking them up as
before, and so on, until the hymn
should be finished.
One Sabbatn morning the mioifi

church with him. Wben the time
arrived to give oup the? hymn be
arose with the open book in his
hand and began to apologize for not
being able to read the lines a us ual
and said :
"Mine eyes ish dim ;
I cannot see to read dis hymn."
The congregation, thinking that
he read the lines from the book,
commenced and sang them through.
The minister, againy trying to ex
plain, said ;'
'I did not meant dat for a hymn ;
I only meant mine eye3 vaa dim.'
The congregation, still thinking
that he was reading the lines from
the book, took them up and sang
them through. s The minister, in
desperation ; because he could not
make them understand him. cried
out; ;; . - -, '., '-!Pr . .
"I tink de devil's .in you all I
, Dat vas no hymn to sing at all."
The congregation sang these lines
also, wben the minister, failing to
make them understand, rushed
from th church in despair, tearing
his hair, i
