An elderly farmer'who lives alone
in a small town in the interior of
Maine awoke the other night to find
two robbers standing at the foot of
his bed, relates Harper's Weekly.
One of them held up a lighted
match, while the other, without
any preliminary demand or state
ment whatever, fired four shots at
him from a revolver. Only one of
these shots took eflect, and that not
seriously, and the farmer, seizing a
gun whicti bung overhead, deliver
ed a charge of old nails and scrap
iron with such good aim that the
vconld-bn murderer had his thumb
shot off and was severely wound-d
in the jaw. Toe two assassins then
fled, but a few hours later the
wounded one was found groaning
on the piazza of a hotel. He nroved
to bo a professional criminal, a Cor
dean hv birth, and a man of excel
lent education, who is said to be
proficient in four or five language.
In Maine where everybody has good
nerves, not much account is made
of the aged farmer's coolness and
promtitude and the chief moral
drawn from the affair is the super
floupness, not to say the danger, of
too much education.- Blackstone
