A New Gan. It is claimed that the best naval and heavy artillery guns in the world are now madn in this country. The power and precision of our guns was superbly demonsrtated in the war with Spain, and gave the Amercao gun-makers great repu Uod. ' . i - j There is a nw American gun of ... . . . . . -' i 1 wnicn wondertur things are pre dieted. It is the Brown eegmental wire wound gun, and is made at the Diamond Drill works. Birdsboro. Pa. The inventor is John Hamilton Brown. a weU known rifle shot, of ; New York. r ' . f : j The government is conducting: a aeries of tests of the Brown! gun. One of these was made at Birdsbojro a few days ago with most interest ing results. A. five-inch gun was used. With smokeless powder this gun developed a force of more than 35 000 pounds to the h square inch. The gun was mounted on an open railroad car, and so great was the force of the concussion that the bed plate of the mount was broken and bolta two inches thick which fas tened it- to the foundation ! were snapped off. M l A The shots did great execution, but no report is to be made upon the merits of the gun until three hundred shots have been fired. If it is found satisfactory under such a severe test the government will order one hundred , of the Brown guns.." v r L- f ; A peculiarity of this gun, besides its wire winding, is its inner tube, or core, made" up of eighteen longis tudinal plates one-eighth of an inch thick, wrapped arouncf a liner tube one half to two inches in thickness 'with a five-inch diameter. When bent the plates are in,, the form oi hq involute curve, looking like a figure 6 Around the core is wrapped one-seventh inch-square wire to the thickness of two inches, and over all is an outer jacket. The length of the five-inch gun is nine teen feet; length of bore 225 inches weight 75,000 poundp; weight of shot 55 pounds, weight of powder charge 16 pounds of smokeless. The)Brbwn gun is very highly oudorsed by experts who have seen attested, some of whom predict ihat it will prove more effective than any other sun of its size.
