Forty Bales From 25 Acres.
The smithfield Herald says Mr.
Polie Gardner, Esq., has 10 acres
of land on which it is esmated by
competent judges that .25 bales
of cotton will be harvested; On
15 more acres 15 bales are esti
mated, making 40 bales on 25
acres. This looks like beating
the world.

ROBBED THE GRAVE.
A startling incident of which Mr.
John Oliver of Philadelphia, was the
subject, is narrated by him as follows:
I was in a most dreadful condition. My
skin was almost-yellow, eyes sunken,
tongue coated, pain continually in back
and sides, no oppetite gradually grow
ing weaker day by day. Three physi
cians had given me up. Fortunately, a
sriend advised trying Electric Bitters:'
and to my great joy and surprise, the
first bottle made a decided improve
ment. I continued their use for three
weeks, and am now a well man. I know
they saved my life, and robbed the grave
of another victim." No one should fail
to try them. Only 50cts., guriateed, at
Fetzer's Drug Store.

The Year Without a Summer.
We are indebted to - a diary
kept by a certain James Dolah,
of Lynchburg, Va., for -the re
markable record -of the year
1816, and it is as follows :
, "The year 1816 tos been called
the year without a summer, for
there was sharp frost in every
month. , The farmers used to re
fer to it as eighteen hundred and,
starve to death. January was
mild as was also February - with
the exception of a few days. The
greater part of March was cold
and boisterous. April opened
warm but grew colder as it ad
vanced,, ending with snow and
ice and winter cold. In May ice
formed half an inch' thick, buds
and flowers were frozen and corn
killed. Frost, ice and snow were
common in Julie. Almost every
green thing was killed and fruit
nearly all destroyed. Snow fell
to the depth of three inches in
New J York and Massachusetts
and ten inches in Maine. July
was accompanied with frost and
ice on the fifth. Ice was formed
to the thickness of window, glass
in New York, New England and
Pennsylvania, and corn was
all destroyed in certain sections.
In August ice formed half an
inch thick. A cold northern wind
prevailed nearly all summer.
Corn was so frozen that a - great
deal was cut down and dried for
fodder. Very little ripened in
New England, and scarcely any
even in the Middle States. Farm
ers were obliged to pay $4 and
5 a bushel for Corn of 1815 -for
seed for the next spring plant
ing. The first two weeks of Sep
tember were mild; the rest of the
month was cold with frost and
ice formed a quarter of an inch
thick. October was more than
usually .cold with frost and ice.
November was cold, blustering,
with snow enough for good
sleighing. December was quite
mild and comfortable.
