The fighting in the Philip
pines these times is about evenly
divided as to attacks between the
natives, and .Americans. Tie
difference seems to be that the
natives always get whipped, but
they don't stay whipped. The
Americans drive them, but for
lack of numbers and ability to
right away till driven olf again.
Enough of . .them get killed, but
with the notion that they are
being attacked by an oppessive
foe they persist in being killed

The New York Evening Post
has interesting and valu
able article on oiled roads.:

ve K-i let at from s205 to 27o natives come out aud pick at thom
per nine wnjcn . includes; tnree
apparitions. It takes one hun
dred barrels to the . mile making
a road bed eighteen feet wide. -
The practical investigations
have led to the following pro
cess: Shape the roads as de
sired, I'-ijii with a larse tank on
wheels apply the oil with an in
strument something like a wheat
drill. T.';to furrows are made
and the oil let into tjhem. These
j-.ro phsughed shut with another
fivrows into which the oil is let.
This revents the oil from pud
dling Liaci refusing to mix evenlv.
A roller is then ran over it.
Tb 1 - treatment takes about
GO b..;.: iv!s to th mile. Fortv
barrels more on the next two ap
plications makes a road believed
to be good for many years
though the duration has prob
ablv not vet been tested.
As we see it there is nothing
like this process. Our rock
road sure good, to be sure, as com-.
pared with muddy roads, , but
soon they're ground .into. dust,
extremely disagreeable in the
dry sul- ner, and then cut into
dips and erelong .they t! must .be
picked up and re-laid.
The oiled road has no dust and'
no mnd. It does not have the
k:o -..- glare of our red : roads in
umiijri and does not cut into
hales and dips readily.
It is well known that a horse
suiters from long travel on a
rock road. The oiled road is
slightly elastic and easy on hQ
feet and the shoes.
We exceedingly regret that a
combination of the county and
town could not be effected to
have t1; " experiment tried here,
in Concord on the road from the
street to the cotton platform.
Indeed it is not too late yet . and
we hope the ex diriment will ere
long be made.
What a boon it. would be, and
at: comparatively little cost
since our roads are nearly all
graded in the county, to have
those spots treated with oil where
the mud always becomes deep
and burdensome in the winter.
We are a. long way off from all
rock roads. It is easily probable
that we have a much nearer solu
tion of the roads problem witS
much less of the. necessary .evils
than there is in the rock road.
It may be considered cranky
to fall in with the greasing pro
cess, but be that as it may we
want to see the matter tested.
A Vigorous Octogenarian.
We met our venerable friend,
Mr. Isaac Goodnight, on the
streets Tuesday. It is gratifying
to see how gently time deals with
him. .Though past his four score
years, nie s winter season nas
deposited little frost on his hair
or beard. He tells us that -until
recent years he. has done. all the
work on -his farm and is yet
equal to. the .task of most of it.
He has but barely ceased to
