The (Jruber Family Heard From.
Mr. H A Chappell writing for
the News and Observer from
Marion says he found the fam
ous Gruber family there running
a hotel. He recalls what many
in the community of Mount
Pleasantand St. John's especi
ably will remember. The Gru
bers were decidedly musical.
The sire would stand on one foot
with, violin in his hands
and the volin-cella leaning
against him with the bow at
tached to 'his toes and chime
bells to his elbows beside other
instruments stuck about him till
nine were counted when he
would strike up as a whole band
by himself . Mrs. Gruber has
af wonderful soprano voice and
the children take to music as
ducks to water. Mr. Chappell
says that while they run a good
hotel they make the house re
sound with music. . The Grubers
are rather a unique family.
Mrs. Buffaloe Wins.
Raleigh has just been treated
to a divorce trial in superior
court that scores high as a sen
sational affair. Mrs. Dr. Buffaloe
sued for a decree of separation
from her husband and liberty to
retrain her only child.
The evidence shows that the
doctor, beside the lack of provid
ing for his family was heartless
and cruel.
The jury found in favor of
Mrs. Buffaloe and the decree
will be granted by the court.
What that doctor got as a
scathing he will not soon forget
unless he is absolutely soulless
which, however, seems probable.
Leaving out the most cutting
sarcasm and personal tirade of
the attorneys opposed to him,
Col. Argo his ; own lawyer who
plead that divorce was not justifi
able based on the evidence said.
"That is no cause for divorce.
It may just simply be one of
those cases of a sorry, lazy hus
bandand there are hundreds
such in Raleigh , a fellow who
just loafs around and lets his
wife work and support him, kills
a bird now and then and sells it
and does nothing the rest of the
year. A man who can and will
not support his wife ought to be
struck thirty-nine -lashes for
breakfast every morning and
have the same for dinner and
supper."
Chamberlain's Pain Balm Cares Others
Why Hot You?
My -wife has been using Chamberlain's
Pain Balm with good results, for a
lame shoulder that has pained her con-
trnuaUy lor nine years. We haye tried
all kinds of medicines and doctors with
out receiving any benefit from any of
them. One day we saw an advertise
ment of this medicine and thought of
tryinsr it, which we did with the best of
satisfaction. She has used only one
bottle and her shoulder is almost well.

Afterthoughts.
It is the things we do not do
that make us weary of life.
. Hardly anybody is as sure of
himself as he would have people
believe.
A sanguine disposition is one
that can continue to hope for
something which it knows won't
happen.
Sometimes when we are most
puffed up over our shadow, we
are standing in our own light.

THE MAN WITH THE JAG.
With Apologies to Edward
Markham :
Bowed by the weight of moun
tain dew he leans
Against a tree and mumbles o'er
his dreams, -
The senselessness -of ages in his
face
And on his back such clothes as i
Prohib never wore.
Who made him dead to all that
passed his way,
A thing that toils merely to buy
the drink,
Babbling and; blear-eyed, a
brother to the hog?
Who loosened and let down this
wagging jaw?
Whose was the hand that raised
aloft the cup?
Whose breath doth show he hath
but little brain?
Is this the Thing -the' Lord Goal
i made and gave . '
To have d ominion in the Sulu
j Sultan's laid;
To count, the staffs" and swear
I that he alone hath power;
To hie and reel until 'Eternity ?
Is his a dream a real man should
want to dream
Cats and monkeys and snakes
. and things?
Down all the street to its last
crooked pole
There is no shape more drunk
than this ' -More
blind to even all the world's
blind greed
More filled with moonshine as he
gabs and leans
And tries to tell his troubles to a
cop.
What gulf between him and the
v loved at home!
Slave to the stuff that cheers,
what to him
Are Christmas and July the
Fourth?
What the sublimity: of Pisgah
and the Rat,
The Vanderbilt estate, and even
Lookout Park? j
Through these red eyes the suf
fering ages look,'
Night's traggedy. following a free

Through this poor shape a ser
mon comes,
Thundered with-each jabbered
-.word,;"' ; , . i,
Crying ; a warning, Beware of
moonshine!
A warning that too few will
heed,
And thus must go before Judge
Ewart or Judge Brown
Is this the end you'd like to

This drunken thing which sways
and talks, " !
How will you ever straighten up
this shape,
Put back the light of horse sense
. in its eye,
Give back the tin that's gone for
drink,
Rebuild it for a useful life, not
dreams,
Make right the hundred, hun
dred infamies'
This Thing hath heaped on help
less heads?
How can we do this needful
thing,
Except we take him to the pub

And there proceed , to hold his

Beneath the wetness for an hour
or two?
How will it be with kingdoms

Who nurse the bottle with, most

Shall rulers -avoid the lantern

Escaping the lawof centuries?
