' It is stated on good authority that the interests of the French bLockholders in the Panama canal have boon purchased by citizens of the United States and that the work of construction will proceed with greater vigor. The capital stock of the com pany will bo increased at once from $30,000,000 to $120,000,000. A representative of thb new company said recently that "the cost of the completion of the work is estimated at $100, 000,000; that one-half of the total coste has already been expended;" that tho route is regarded as the best and that the purpose of the company is to press the work to completion at the earliest practicable date. In ppite of the disastrous failure of the Ue LessKeps company, there are niauy eminent engineers wLo contend that the Panama canal can be completed at much less expense than the Nicarguan canal could he constructed and that the former would have many other advantages over the latter. A great part of the work done at Panama by the original com pauy is still good and bo is much ot the machinery that was bought and used by that company. , The capitalists who are behind the Panama canal have absolute confidence in the success of their great enterprise and Bay that they neither need nor desire assis tance. The prospects of the Panama canal were never before so good and we shall not be surprised to see it completed before the Nica ragua canal is begun. Then would it be profitable to construct the Nicaragua canal at all? Atlanta Journal.
