contracted that worse that silly
habit of "gum chewing. Ji. few
days ago- she felt a drawing sen

that her jaw is paralyzed. It re

paralysis will yield to the treat

The cure for the habit may be a

Dr. Lewis Says the Disease is Not Being
Stamped Out
b The month of February has
witnessed no.cjpangewn tmconi
dition of the outbreak or small
pox in ttJI State.
Dr. B H Lewis, tf e secretary
of the .State Board Tf Health,
said yetgrday, that the disease
had as'strong a fopthold a ever.
During the month., new cases
have been reported in Orange
and one or two other counties.
The outbreak in several counties
west of Raleigh. Dr. Lewissaicf,1
is directly tracabl to forces of
hands working for. the Postal
Tjelegrapht, . Company , ' They
spread the disease m .Orange,
Dr. Lewis stated, and are now in
Alamance.
"People over the statS con
tinue to. diagnose smallpox as
chicken pox," Dr. Lewis said.
"The disease cannot be stamped
out so long as such "conditions
prevail. Other names for small
pox, which some persons ' are
eVen inclined o accept are 'ele
phant itch' and Georgia bumps."
A physician in Eastern Caro
lina, who has a state.-wide repu
tation? a few weeks since declared
that a smallpox patient had ele
phant itch. Fortunately the
county authorities took the ad
vice of other. 'physicians who
diagnosed the case smallpox.
Dr. Lewis stated yesterday that
there is no such disease as ' 'elo
phantitch," Raleigh Post. '
Raleigh Has a Blaze.
Raleigh had a blaze Wednes
day morning. A large tobacco
prize house.four stories high run
by Mr. E L Fleming took fire
and was ' consumed, . together
with the dwolling of Mrs. Geo. II
Williams.
The loss was something like
$30,000. ' Inadequate water pres
sure seems 'chiefly responsible
for the loss. There was about
$23,000 of insurance. 1

Protection Against Porto Ufo
The House 'passed the Porto
Rican tariff bill on Wednesday
by a vote of 172 to 161 imposing
a tariff of 15 per cent eff the tariff
rates on similar importations
from other countries. It is not
in accord with President Mc-
Kinley's farmer construction
of the true relations of tho
islands to the rest of the United
States of which it now j&ems a
part, but with the proviso that
the proceeds be applied to
schools and public enterprises
on the island, the President
seems reconciled.
This maintains the Republican
principle of protection and re-
reeident Illinois Woman's Allianoe. in
speaking of Chamberlain's Cough

to run into pneumonia. I tried differ
ent remedies but seemed to grow worse

Cough Remedy and I found it was
pleasant to take and it relieved me at
once. I am now entirely recovered.
