Improvement in the Situation.
Chapel Hill, Dec!: 18.—“Epbch mak
ing changes have taken t place slowly
and quietly iu the fraternity situation
at tlie University of North
according to an article by Francis F.
Upshaw, dean of students at the Uni
versity, published in the Alumni Re
view.
Dean Upshaw recites that the new
system of pledging freshmen, which was
made effective this week, together with
a notable increase in chapters and mem
bership, make for a marked improve
ment in the fraternity situation as com
pared with years gone by.
He continues that fraternities have
multiplied with the growth of the stu
dent body until no wthere
whereas the way of the new fraternity
in former years was made extremely
difficult, that now the formation of lo
cals and their installation as nationals
is now encouraged: that the fraternity
of today is larger than than of the past
with many chapters having a member
ship of twenty or more: and that the
fraternity men now constitute 25 per
cent, of the student body ajs compared
with 17 per cent, a decade ago. Dean
Upshaw's article goes into the frater
nity situation at the University in a
detailed manner, his conclusions being
that the fraternities are a helpful force
at the institution

AT OTEEN CHRISTMAS
Baraca-Philathea Union Will Fill Boxes

Asheville, Dec. 17.—The task of pro-,
viding a well filled box of useful gifts
for every disabled ex-serViet» mfem at
Oteen hospital. Uragmont find other sau
atoriums which is undertaken
by tlie state Baraca-Philathea Union,
bids fair to be very successful this year,
according to Mrs. N. Buckner, general
executive secretary of the Baraca-Phila
thea Union.
The beautiful Christmas boxes, which
have been furnished by the Keystone Pa
per Box Manufacturing Company, of
Burlington, are a bit larger than any that
have been used heretofore by the Buracas
[and Philatbeas. yet it is believed that
every box will be generously filled by the
good friends who have always assisted
in making the Christmas plans success
ful and take this opportunity to send a
message tq the patients by their gifts.
Sfanv splendid gifts have been received
by tlie Baraca-Philathea office in Ashe

Mrs. Buckner lias called attention to

BACK TO PAPERS AFTER
A COSTLY EXPERIMENT
Big Concern That Tried Out a Beauty
Contest and Employed Film Star at
Large Salary Has Decided to Spend
$1,000,000 Advertising in Dailies.
Fourth Estate.
A company manufacturing cosmetics
has just completed the expenditure of
a large* sum. estimated at fully $300.-
060, on a beauty contest. Directors of
the concern stated after this campaign
was over, that as a result of the lesson
learned they contemplated the appro
priation of $1,000,000, in a straight ad
vertising campaign in daily newspapers
throughout the country..
The company, is alleged to have paid
Rudelph Valentino, screen star, SIO,OOO
a week for seventeen weeks ill a tour of
the country in which he selected beau
ties from each state. This expense,
whatever it actually may have been is
rapidly becoming skeptical as to the real
salaries of SIO,O) Hj a week film favo
rites—was augmented by the cost of a
private car for the star aud his manager
and party.
It cost SIO,OOO to rake the bdautie*
selected on a tour of the country end
ing in New York and a very much larger
sum for their maintenance and dresses.
The extent of the publicity obtained may
be judged when it is realized that 75.-
000 iieople crowded to Madison Square
Garden to see the final awards made
and paid from $1 to $5 apiece for the
privilege.
So far as actual sales of the manu
factured product are concerned, the re
sults cannot yet be accurately estimated,
but the fact that the directors of the
concern express themselves as de
termined to confine their expenditure-*
iu future to the printed word at regu
lar display rates, is significant.
The remits of the recent advertising
exposition yielded - similar food for
thought. The advertising exposition,
according to business men, was the best
press'ageufed and worst advertised show
in New'* Y'ork and the lesson has not
gone unheeded.
