The Reporter. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30,1880. ' LOCAL NEWS. PUBLIC SPEAKING.— Messrs, W B. Glenn and A. 11. Joyce, candidates for the State Senate, together with the other candidates for publio of fices, will meet the people of Stokes, at the following times and places, to wit: Walnut Cove, Monday October, 11 Gcrmanton, Tuesday " 12 Dalton, Wednesday " 13 Tom Joyces'store, Thursday " 14 Lawsonvillc, Friday " 15 Sandy llidge, Saturday, " 16 The candidates for the House of Rep resentatives and County offices will also meet the people at the following places : W C Southerns, Monday October, 18 Watt's Store, Tuesday " 19 Covington's School House, Wednesday October, 20 Francisco, Thursday October, 21 Win Uennett's, Friday " 22 Presiouville, Tuesday " 26 Delightful weather. Rather too dry for turnips, Most of our farmers are nearly through cutting their tobaoco. Keep this paper for reference in re gard to the school money. Don't forget our request last week to pay at least apart of your subscription. We have yet to hear of the first tobacoo barn being burnt iu the neighborhood tbis fad. Wild pigeons have put in their ap pearanje, "scouts" we suppose looking alter the acoru crop. The Danbury minstrels met Wednea day night last to make arrangements for the concert court week. Remember the Southern mail leaves Dun bury now at 5 o'clock a. UJ , instead of 7 o'clock, as heretofore. We learn that soic thro it is prevailing to a considerable extent on the Little Yadkin in the south western put of this county. Pepper & Sons received this week a bice line of Fall prints, dress goods notions, drugs, w JOJUU willow ware, and school books. Thanks to those subscribers who came forward during the past week and paid their subscription to the BEPOKTEH Again we say, thank you gentlemen. Wu saw Mr lu üben East Saturday, be told us that he had cut and cured liiuetecn burns of tobacco and hud sev eral to cut yet. Good woik for four hands. We bad rather see the Democratic, Greenback, Republican or any other party iu power than to see Grant emperor, so had anybody else in the County ex cept one Republican candidate. The pill is too bitter. Hundreds of the honest Republicans of Stokes can't swallow Garfield, but we believe the Re. publican candidates will all take him aown if they have to shut their eyes and hold their breath. Col Ben Bailey informed usSaturday that Mr Gray, the President of the C F & Y V Railroad, had written to Dr M Banner that he would put hands to work on the Railroad at Walnut Cove by the 10th oi 15th of next month. The Republicans now havo two can didates out for the lower branch of the Legislature, Mr P H Terrell and Col Martin Mabe, both clever men, but their goodness won't atone for the corruption of their leaders. We learn that Dr S King is out as a Green backer. MARRIED In the Moravian church in Kerners ville, September 21st 1880, by Rer. 0. L. Rights, assisted by Rev. AmesGregson, Mr. Henry E. Shore to Miss Ella N Kerner, oldest daughter of Dr. E Ker nor. Ella is gone to that long Sltore from which she will return no more Thanks to those friends who have so generously came to our assisfanoe in keeping up a County paper, we will send out ninety six more oopies of the REPORTER this week than we seat out last, hope the number will increase until , the REPORTER ean be found at the house I of every reading fumily in the county. The public school io District No. 25» Peter s Creek township, will eommenae on Monday, October 4th, with Capt. T, J. Blackburn as teacher. AN OLD CITIZEN GONE.— Died at Neatman, in this County, on Thursday evening, 23rd insf., Mr Martin Gibson, aged 78 years, one month and 23 days. MARRIED.— On Sunday, September 26th, 1880, at the residence of the bride's parents, about five miles west of Danbury, by L F. Smith, Esq , Mr JOHN HALE, lately of Clinton oouuty, Pennsylvania, to Miss JANE MoUNCE,of Stokes county, North Carolina. We are requested to state that the icaßou Mr. Thomas Martin, tno Demo cratic candidate for sheriff, has not been around with the other candidates, is owing to the health of his wife; he told us at the speaking here on the 2lst instant, that he had not taken off bis clothes to sleep since our oourt. The health of Danbury Is good, not withstanding some of our people have been trying to have typoid fever, and hanging around their doctor trying to get him to say they were sick, we believe they will not be able to get up any thing better than a ould or slight sore throat. A NEW POST OFFICE It is not generally known that the Post Office at Neatman in this County is now open and in working order with Mr H R Carrell as post master. We will take pleusure in changing the name of any of our subscribers from other offices to Neatman when it will be for their con venience, if they will let us know that tbey wish the change made. A MISTAKE We are authorised to say for Mr John Martin (ex-sheriff) that those persons circulating the report that he or bis biother, Jerry Martin, will not vote for Mr Thomas Martin, the Democratic can didate lor sheriff, are either honestly mis taken, or else they are willfully lieing ; that they will both not only vote for their brother, but will do every thing they can honorably to eleot him. That must have been a business like young man who waked up nearly half the quiet inoffensive citizens of Danbury last Thursday night hunting for a Mag istrate, Clerk, S eriff. Doctor, Lawyer, Postmaster, or any body else who could give him lisence to marry. It was just midnight when he succeeded in finding the deputy Register, who supplied his wants, when, without farther ceremony the s»id young man left for his girls house just ten miles away. TELL US SOMERODY.— Will somebody please tell us what under heaven induced the Republican party to put forward a man for president of this great uation so corrupt and so degraded as Jas A. Garfield And what in the name of the patriotism of tjie American people the houor and in tegrity of the founders of this great government, can men olaiming to be honest men think of supporting such a man for office. And what in the name of all that is good do men think of vot. ing for men to fill the County and State offices who will support such a man for office as Jas. A. Garfield. THINK ! THINK ! THINK ! We invite attention of our readers to the new Hardware Store of Brown, Vaughn tf? Co, in the Brown Building, at Winston. These gentlemen, while goods were low, bought by the car-load, and are selling extremely low. They can sell vou anything from a two-ounce taok to a saw mill, or from fine silver knives and forks to a bar of iron They have just reoived a oar-load of cooking stoves, aod another is on the way.
