A Former Stokes Boy Writes Inter estingly of Things '•Down South." Hamlet, N. C., Jan. 8. Editor Reporter : With the dawn of the Now | Year, I left Greensboro over the Southern Railway, No, 33 fast train for the South, passing numerous prosperous towns and citios lam by noon in Columbia, the capital ot' the great old Pal motto State I rest for a few hours until next train going my route, and by 0 p m get off at a little wayside station called East, over in the hc.urt of the cotton growing regions. Here 1 find an institu tion not found anywhere els§ south the Mason and Dixon line, a free delivery for the school chil dren ot' the district Morning and afternoon yon soo a merry crowd of happy Children going to and from school in a bus built express ly for their transportation. I am inform -d that four or five schools wore consolidated and u graded school established anil that this feature attracts a larger attendance and that the difference in the cost of maintaining the several schools separately more than pays the ex pense of hiring the men to operate tlioso doliverioß. Well, my work is complete by Thursday and 1 leave over the Atlantic Const Lino for Sumter. Here 1 tind t!.>> true sportsman. Sumter, a town of 12,000 inhabi tants has 65 automobiles. I became weary with the continual toot, toot! of these machines as they give warning that they are coining. Well Sumter is a good town to spend Sunday, although there is no place like home to the true "knight of tho grip." Sunday morning dawns warm ami clear and 1 go for a walk over concrete sidewalks and paved streets, past beautiful homes where 1 sec in tho yards large bushes of capo jessamines in full bloom and 1 compare in mind the difference between the dead, bleek winter of western North Carolina and this a sunny dine where the violets are now in full bloom. I am much impressed with the city hospital which is built with the now concrete blocks made like a stone from sand concrete which hardens with age and becomes as serviceable as granite. There are several factories in Sumter that manufacture these building blocks. I suppose tho hospital with its furnishings must have cost at least $75,000. Well, 1 became weary of walking before 1 have seen near all the streets of interest and go back to the hotel and am in bed by nine o'clock to fight at one or two old mosquitoes who have survived tho colds so far and who seem to think they should bite you in January as well as July. Sumter is tho next best town to Charleston in the lower S. C. country and the only thing I dis like about the town is that water is running tin year round in gutters of its streets, but from a sanitary standpoint, its system is perfect. Well. Monday morning finds me on my way to historic Camden, pass ing 30 miles through vast swamps and some tine farming lands. I arrive in tho town whore there is a monument erected in moruory of tho great Baron DeKalb, who came from France to help Ameri can patriots in their struggle for liberty during the Revolutionary war. There is also a monument to the ".i n fumous Mexican war 1., u'.c ■ •!. '•ut 1 failed to take his name. Thore it. a grave of an Irish lassie near Camden who followed Cornwallis to America to see her lover who was dead when NUMBER 5 ahe arrived, and she died and was buried by the soldiers and the tombstone is still there. Camden has throo tourist hotels and is now full of people from up north who , came South for the winter. Golf and polo are leading pastimes and quite interesting to me. Somo idea as to the growing woalth of this greatjcountry is demonstrated by the bank statements of Sumter and Orangeburg; there is on de posit in these twojtowns over four million dollars. Just think of these things, young man from Stokes, when you emigrate west, Change your mind, come to a sunny clime where you can grow • almost anything andjwhere money is easy. Sooner or later the '•nigger" will be a .thing of the pastas a help to the Southern farm er and the people now' are.anxious to get emigrants from the foreign countries to replace them. A negro is good to shine shoes and wait on tables and .run errands around towns, He is like a pig eon, loves a congregation of white houses and the "toot" of a railroad train. P. J W.
