GIVE US A CLEAN FAIR. Mr. W. A Petree Thinks Flatshoal Or Meadows the Place. Mr. Editor: As my name was used in con nection with what was said in the Reporter some weeks ago, about our County Fair, a race-track, etc., perhaps it may be inferred that I am in favor of horse-raoing and such things, being allowed in connection with the Fair. But I wish to say that I always have been and am now, and forever opposed to such things. For it seems to me that we should go forward instead of backward, and as I see it, this horse racing is only a relic of darker ages into which we, as enlightend people should be ashamed to turn back and enter: as it only caters to, and fosters a spirit of barbarism and cruelty. Truly, it reminds me of the old Roman Gladiators. When we remember that the Agriculture of our land makes possible every other calling or vocation of life, or that it is the very foundation upon which every other business must rest, we will not fflil to see that our agricultural interests are too sacred and holy to demoralize, de grade and put down on a level with horse-racing, fakirs, side shows, gambling dens and the like, which are allowed to disgrace al most every Fair ground in the land, be it said to the shame of those who are in charge of these grounds. We can never hold up the Industrial, Agricultural and Moral interests of our people and keep them on a level with their proper dignity as long as we as sociate them with such things $s appeal to the baser Bide of man's naturo, and the caprices of the thoughtless ones. So then if we have a County Fair, let us all do the best we can to make its every feature serve as a fyotor to lift °\» r people up to u higher plane of life, Industrially, Sooially, Morally, Intellectually and Financially. As to where the Fair shall be I he.d I have no preference, other than that I think we should have some nice level ground somewhere as near the center of the connty as [possible. Perhaps Meadows, or Flat Shoal, either one would be as good a place as any. W, A. PETREE.
