Delightful Social Function Monday Night. Tho young men of Danbury tomlered the young Indies of Piedmont Springs and of Dan bury ail ice cream party on the lawn of the Peppers at Danbury | Monday night. The voung men all express themselves as I than repaid for their trouble by | the pleasures of the evening, i There were stories uud games, ! conversation aud music. The night was perfect, the air exhilara ting and delightful. For once in ; many, many days it didn't rain, i Vanilla cream and hannna sherbet, I and a number of pastries were I served. The guests in attendance were i as follows: From Piedmont: Miss Hester| I Allen, of Troy ; Miss Minnie Ross, iof Concord', Miss Moselle Partee, jof Bluefield, West Virginia; Miss ! Laura Noell, of Elkin; Misses An-! ! nie and Minnie King, of Spencer, j ! Virginia; Mr. T. J. King. of Roan-j ! oke, Virginia; Messrs. Foushee | and Grantham of Greensboro. From Danbury: Miss Willie! Edmonds, of Winston; Miss Lillaj Hriggs Prathor, of Mount Airy; Misses Nellie and Mary Joyce, I Sadie Petree, Mary Martin, Josie,! Jessie and Blannie Pepper. Dr. VV. V. (Janless, Mesars. Hum | phreys,Martin, Petree and Pepper, j Wonderful Instance of Presence Of Mind. We often hear of "presence »f mind," but don't know when we I have tfMun such a striking install e of it as was displayed at Pine Hall a few days since. Two gentlemen from Winston, Dr. Hanes aud .Mr. Wingate Brown, were attempting to cross Dan river at nb ut 12 ololock in the night, when, not being much accustomed to the ; ford, they drove into the swollen stream and soon found themselves | literally "in a hole." They some how missed the ford, and being in a deep place, taw that the wator was about to get the advantage of them. Dr. Ilanes cut loose his horses, giving them the opportu nity to make for the other bank, but a* they didn't do this, he plunged in after them. Now comes the wonderful instanoe of ''presence of mind." Mr. Brown thinks to preserve his clothes even in this hour of danger, so before venturing in to follow his frieud, he diveats himself of every article of clothing, from his hat to his shoos. When he returns a few minutes afterwnrd, nude und drip ping, but with thp hpart-beats of a conqueror, he finds, to his dis may that buggy and clothes have all disappeared. Perhaps never before did he so much sympathize with Adam and Evo in their firat attempt at ga r monl-iniikirtg. Dr. Hatu>s !K»kf*d dixtn wi'ii prnh aud pleosurH at hisown al rit il clothes and condii'lit.) Ihiit mi ones were far better th; u none n all. They mounted their h s and rode t*> Mr, Ch'tm.n i's I d iu 1 about a mil" distant Mr. Che - man rather hoa»ts of iot !.ei:ii> afraid of gliosis, but wn think hi.s heart-beats were quickened when about one that night he opened his door to find a shivering figure wrapped in a white counterpane standing on the back galleiy. It was Mr. Jirown, who soou ex plained his situation. Of course he was hospitably received and entertained, and the next morning he made a very presentable appear anoe at the breakfast table. The ladies complimented him 011 his graceful wearing of another man's clothes, and they think that he has now successfully proved his capacity to "stand in Mr. Chis man's shoes." BENT HER DOUBLE. "I know no one for four weeks,! when I was sick with typhoid and 1 kidney trouble," writes Mrs. An nie Hunter, of Pittsburg, Pa., "and when I got better, although I kad one of the best doctors I could get, I was bent double, aud had to rest my hands on iny knees when I walked. From this terri ble affliction I was recued by | Electric Bitters, which restored my hoalth and strengt\ and now I can walk as straight as ever. They are simply wonderful." Guaranteed to cure stomach, liver and kidney disorders; at all drug stores; price 50c. In all probability a great crowd 1 of peoplo will assemble at Dan bury, August 11 at tho old soldiers meeting. ON 'THE RIDGE. Sandy Ridge Girls Expected to See Danbury Play Ball—lce Cream Supper Saturday Night. I Sandy Ridge, July 23.—Mies I Doan Pilaris, who has been spend j ing sometime with relatives here, ' returned to her home at Douglas Friday. Miss Pearl Brown, of Vinton, | ► Va., is visiting relativos here. Miss Ilarger, of Douglas, is speuding a few weeks with rela tives here. Mr, Jim Scales, of Winston, 1 spent a few days of last week at his old home. He has just return- j ed from a several weeks' visit to ] Missouri. Misssos Lillie and Jessie Joyce! visited Mr. Newt Martin's at Wal-i 1 nut Cove Saturday and Sunday, i ! They wore accompanied by the j Price boys of course. Wonder why Danbury rbfuses: i to play ball with our Sandy Ridge j boys'/ Of course they have never | j been beaten, but Danbury might j j be more successful. Mr, Robert Morefield, of Camp I boll, spent yesterday nt Mrs, Lula Hutcherson's. Also Mr. Sam! Brown. Guess our redheaded; | boy is blue today. Hfty, you Dftubury boys, there ! weie several young ladies disap -1 pointed Saturday. They were ex j pecting to that ball game at Dan- I bury Saturday, and wore sorry you ! refused to jjlay. Republican Primaries Saturday—Con test Only For Treasurer. The Republican primaries take place Saturday. As far as the Reporter is able to learn there will be a oonteßt only for tho office of County Treasurer, there being about 15 avowed .candidates for | tho place, with other probable candidates. It is not known who will be the winner, Clerk of the Court M. T. Chilton, Register of Deeds C. M. Jones and Sheriff R. J. Petree are al most certain to be renominated. 1 If some politician at each of the precincts will send us the names of the delegates elected, we can form a pretty correct estimate for a forecast to be printed in the next issue of tho Reporter, as to! who will bo nominated for Treas urer. Now don't depend on some- 1 | Itody else sending the report— i I send it yourself, and we will tell you in next Thursday's issue who will be tho nominee for Treasurer. 1 FORCED TO STARVE. B. F.
