Briefs Adrift. Mr. John W. Baker WHS in town Saturday, Stokes Superior court convenes one month from next Saturday. Farmers say that flies are ajjont to destroy all the tobacco plants. _ Mr. Ham Stewart, of Winston, spent Easter with his parents here. Attorney Geo. P. Pell, of Wins ton, was here Monday looking the sale of some land. Mr. L. B. Simmons and family, of Winston, spent Easter with relatives near Danbury. Mr. R. H. R. Blair and family attended the wedding of Mr. Sid ney Kiser and Miss Martha Smith, at Mizpah, Sunday. Misses Nellie and Mary Joyce and Mary Taylor, Danbury girls who are off at school, spent Easter with relatives in Winston. The Blue Ridge mountains, which can be seen plainly from the hill just south of town, were covered with snow Tuesday morn ing. Mr. Jesse A. Lawson, of Smith R. F. D. No. 1, was on last Thurs day appointed receiver in the bankruptcy proceedingsagainst T. W. Hylton. A board of appraisers, composed of Messrs. W. G. Slate, M. V. Mabe and Geo. Ziglar, have been appointed in the bankrupt pro ceedings against T. W. Hylton. The local weather prophets who predicted two snows during the last two weeks of March didn't know. Rarely, if ever, have we had Buoh nice weatber in March. Mr. J. E. Moore, of Patrick Springs, Va., spent last night at the Taylor Hotel. Mr. Moore says the reports in regard to the recent forest fire in Patrick county were exaggerated. The frost and cold weather Mon day and Tuesday injured the fruit crop to some extent. Fortunately most of the apple trees had not bloomed yet. Wheat was not in jured to a great extent. Tho Danbnry base ball team has challenged the Meadows team for a match game to be played here Saturday. It is not known at this writing whether the chal lenge will be accepted or not. A series of revival meetings are in progress at the M. E. church this week, oonducted by Rev. J. T. Ratledgo and Pastor D. H. Bink ley. The meeting will likely be continued throughout the week. . Several Road and Bridge Petitions Before the Commlaaioners—Other Business Transacted: The County Commissioners were in session Monday, transacting the following business : A petition asking for a hriiige across Old Field creek in Meadows township was presented. The Board refused to take any action in the matter. R F. Bondurant was sworn in as county Surveyor in place of J. S. Pell, who was elected and failed to qualify. Tax assessors for each of the townships were appointi d aa fol lows : Danbury—L. J. Young, J. Spot Tavlor and P. H. Young. Meadows —J. Walter Fowler, I. G. Ross and G. Thos. Baker. Yadkin —S. W. Hall, D. V. Car roll and S. M. Goff. Quaker Gap—L. L. Lowe, B. A. Overby and W. A. Tilley. Peters' Creek —H. H. Reid, G. G. Shelton and J. A. Lawson. Snow Creek—T. H. Priddy, D. S. R. Martin and D. F. Duggins. Beaver Island —Jno. W. Young, W. M. Peobles rfnd R. N. Wall. Sauratown —H. G. Tuttle, E. A. Rothrock and J. H. Fulton. It was ordered that each board of assessors appoint one of their members list-taker. An eleotion was ordered in Pin nacle special school district on May 6, in accordance with legisla tive act, on the question of levying special tax not to exceed 33J cents on property and SI.OO on poll. J. W. King was appointed regis trar and W. L. Culler and V. D. Boles judges. A petition prepared by C. A. Mickey and others and asking for a road in Quaker Gap near Moore's mill was presented. The road was laid out several years ago and the board ordered it opened up and hands assigned. The petition asking for a change in the Red Shoal road, presented at the meeting last month, was again laid over. County Buys New Cross-Index. An order has been placed for i the necessary books for a new cross-index for the Register of Deeds office. The committee, com posed of Messrs. N. O. Petree, W. W. King and C. M. Jones, ap pointed by the Board of Commis sioners for that purpose, select ed the loose-leaf Burr Patent In dex, which is probably the best to i be had anywhere. Bagby, wjio has beeu quite sick for several days with measles, I is able to be out again. The Walnut Cove and Walker town base ball teams crossed bats j at Walnut Cove park Saturday af ternoon. The score stood 18 to 15 , in favor of the Walnut Cove boys. A large crowd witnessed the scene ' and seemed to enjoy it very much. Mr. E. E. Fulp, son of Dr. E. | Fulp, who is in school at Oak - Ridge this year, came up Friday to spend Easter with his parents. Mr. Fulp is a promising young c man and we wish him much sue- 1 oess in school. f There will be Sunday School in 1 the Moravian church every Sun- 3 day at 2 o'clock, P. M. Owing to the difficulty of getting i a teacher the school will not ex pire before May the Ist. Miss Nettie Gerry, who has been spending several months with her brother, returned to her home in Chatham county Friday. Mill Creek's first nine and Wal nut Cove's second nine crossed bats in ball game at Walnut Cove , Monday evening. The score stood 18 to 16 favoring the Cove boys. Come again, Creek boys, when we 1 get our first nine together we will show you all how to play ball as you don't know how. We are very sorry for the boys but we will let them win the next game, that is if they oan. Mr. Gaither Davis, who is hold ing a position with Jenkins Bros. Shoe Co., at Winston, came out Friday on a visit. Mr. 0. L, Gerry, who has been visiting his parents in Chatham, returned Sunday. Mr. Cabell Fulp left Monday for High Point.
