FARMERS" INSTITITE
RKPORTKD BY ! G. ROSS
Th: Attendance Small As
Usual. Rut the Information Give
Out Was Very Valuable.
Locust Mil! Fare . July 2:».
Editor of the Reporter :
I see in viiur locals that you
haw placed the burden upon me
to write up the farmers' institute.
Our attendance gives me but
little encouragement to write.
While I think it is my duty to
encourage agriculture in every
place that I can. I believe if I
was tu write the speeches in full
it would have a tendency to keep
more at home. They could say
that it is needless for me to pro,
the Reporter will give me a'l that
is saiil of importance and I wll
stay at home today and not drive
over our rough roads. 1 lost
two days going and consider that
I made more these days than
any days this year. We had
with us Mr. A. L. French and I.
S. Millsap, both wore able men
and gave us the most importune
information that has ever been
given at any institute held in
the county for I got there lie
cause I make more on those days
than any days. Mr. French was
the first to speak. He was very
careful in telling us how to keep
our hillsides from washing away
and how he managed his farm
with himself and a boy only 15
years old. they doing all the
work themselves and would this
year make 2j(.io bushels of corn
and when he bought the place it
would not make any. The owner
had to sell in self defense. 1
could tell you the things he said
he had done and was doing but
I am not going to because 1 want;
you all f» come out to our in
stitutes and learn these things:
yourselves. Mr. Millsap came
in the afternoon. He had a :
diagram of bis speech on the!
blackboard, showing the analysis,
of all the grains and tobacco'
showing just what, each took out|
of the land, what kind of fertilizer 1
each plan! required and how,
inefficient the 8-2 fertilizers
|
were for any of them. He show-i
ed how >orrv it was to giving our
plants a properly balanced food
by comparing the plant, to this
pig or the calf and went too far
as to say to br.ng our babies in J
order that he might impress his |
thoughts upon js. I think it
was the finest and most impres
sive thing 1 ever listened to.
I feel that every farmer in our
county who failed to hear Mr.
Millsap has lost at least one
hundred dollars out of his pocket.
Perhaps not so much by not
hearing Mr. French, while some j,
lost much more by not hearing
him. I cannot give the same
diagram that Mr. Millsap gave,
but it would have a tendency
towards keeping people away,
and I will not give it.
I am Chairman of the county j
and all the blame rests upon me!
for a crowd. I ask for the j
institute and name the places ,
where to hold it and there is no j
one that feels more thankful to i
the ones who attended than i do; 1
and want to extend my highest i
appreciation to them for their ]
presence and good attention.
