Some limes It Pays lo Se A Tobacco Farmer. I Winston-Salem, Oct. 29. — The; local leaf tobacco market is still i I firm, and statistics show that a! total of 7,500,000 .pounds has | been sold here since the begin - j ning of the present tobacco year,j August 1. Tobacco has brought an average of about £14.73 a hundred, which means that 51,105,250 has been paid out to the farmers of this j section thus far this year. The sales started this week with a clean deck, the market j caught up with the big glut: which lasted 11 days. During that time, a tremendous amount | of tobacco changed hands and the average price did not fall below | 15 cents a single day during the, big break. Half a million dollars j changed hands during the break j just ended. Last week's total sales ag- \ gregated 1,746,063. This is the j largest number of pounds of to- J bacco sold in a single week this year, eclipsing the sales of the former week by 100,000 pounds. The market average for the week was £15.54. High prices remained steady throughout the big sales, this j being quite a surprise to every one because of the fact that such great quantities wetv rush ed in the market at om- time. !!>• lemand for light grades •ti ! remains strong and it is n ■ iio'ight that t• n»*ie« s for i!-.-.rrades will drop anv !• »\v» ■ Ti' irs: cuings turned -nit this p/oved to lie tile b.;:t c I'red tobacvA s>en o>i this market i' years. Reports hd'.v-'V -r, I'r >:n section.-. are no' very encouraging as to the later firings.. It is thought before lung now the bright grades will all be sold and a slump in prices is then expected. The crop in this section this year is divided into two kinds; the good and the bad: there is none fairly good, it is either very good or very bad. It is the most prosperous time with the tobacco farmers in years and money is plentiful enough in the tobacco-producing areas near here. Farmers are putting the wheat in the ground these days, and the indications point to a fairly good acreage. But everybody should try to raise enough bread to keep from buying, as Hour is not apt to ever be cheap again, but will gradually get higher.
