Supt. of Schools J. T. Smith has been visiting some of the public schools of the county the past week. Miss Delia Stuart and Mr. Sam Stuart, of Winston, will spend Christmas with their home folks here. Col. J. H. Stuart and fam ily. Elders Paul and B. F. Priddy were in town on business Thurs day. These gentlemen have purchased the J. T. Priddy tract of land. Mrs. A. L. Fletcher, of Lex ington, is spending Christmas with her mother and father. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pitzer. at Red Shoals. Mr. Fletcher is the editor of the Lexington Dis patch. and is one of the leading "Urnalists of the State. Mr. William Mounce, Sr., was in town today. Mr. Mounce did not raise any tobacco at all this year, but tempted by the high prices he will try it next year. He raises corn, but his expenses being small, he is'in better shape financially than lots of tobacco raisers. Mr. and Mrs. R. R. King, who have been visiting here several months, expect to leave about January Ist. Mr. King will probably accept a position with the Virginia Bridge & Iron Co., of Roanoke, Va. Miss Mamie Freeman, princi pal of the public school here, is spending the holidays at her home in Greensboro. Among the visitors in town Thursday were Messrs. Wm. Z. , Shelton, of Danbury Route 1. and C. W. Sisk, of Hartman. The public roads are unusual ly good for this season of the vear. They are usually almost impassable by Christmas. Mr. Paul and Miss Grace Tay lor. who have been students at 1 Guilford College, are here to ' spend the Christmas holidays with home folks. > Misses Mary Martin and Sadie , Petree, both of whom have posi tions in the public schools of Peter's Creek township, have re | turned to spend the holidays at home. t 1 Mr. Watt Priddy, adminis i trator of the estate of the late J. The following items were taken from the last issue of the Mount Airy: I The new sand-clay roads in this township demonstrate that there is no better for this section. I These roads have stood the re i cent freezes and appear to be in las good shaf»e as they were in the early fall. The local tobacco warehouses will close next Saturday for the holidays and there will be no sales until the 2nd of January. It is estimated that three fourths 'of the crop is sold but prices j continue unusually high. Solicitor S. P. Graves, of this city, is an applicant for the j United States district Attorney for the Western district to suc ceed Hon. A. E. Holton whose term of office soon expires. .Mr. Graves will enter into the con test with practically the unani mous judicial district and num erous lawyers from all sections of the State. S. ; Lineberry, superintendent of the Saldiers' Home, will show a balance of $3,551. 06 from the annual appropriation of §31,000 for the maintenance of that in stitution. Salaries and wages I amounted to $7,396, clothing; to $1,820.49, uniform suits to 91,000, provisions to $8,461.50, 1 ordinary repairs to SIOO, wood and coal and all other expenses to $8,070.&i-a total of $27,448.- 34. Here the line part of the re i cord of the home for the 12 , months ending November 30 stops, for 03 of the veterans died during the year, making > an average of over five funerals a month.
