| How lightning tills. 1 Having in mind the deaths by i * lightning that have been in! i Surry county recently, the editor , of the Mt. Airy News asked Mr. y T. J. Smithwick, an electrician j of that town, to tell him some-; | thing of the force and effects of 1 I a bolt of lightning as compared I 1 with the currents that are pro-1 i duced by machines. When a man is electrocuted by law a J j current of electricity is produced | ► by a machine that is sufficiently j . strong measure to produce death | , if passed through the body. A current strong enough to have j twelve hundred volts, as they | | measure electricity, would kill 1 a man, but they make the cur-1 ( rent as strong as three thousand j to be certain of results. Now -Mr. Smithwick says , that to turn a current ofj j electricity of this strength loose; on a tree would not produce any i effects in ,the least. The current [ that tears up a tree would measure up in the millions of | ; volts and is so strong that no, j human being could estimate! \ its strength. If one of these | i volts of lightning should strike | i a man direct it would possibly' blow his bodv into atoms and not a particle of it could be found. Most people killed by ; lightning are killed by the shock [ when some object near them is t struck. No machine ever in (• vented is able to produce enough electricity to make a noise when ' released like one hears in aj thunder storm. Man has no ' way of making a Hash of light-1 ning like one sees in the heavens, by mechonical means, except in ' a very small way A Hash aj foot or even two feet long can 1 be produced and a small noise I i accompanies it just as one hears] when a storm is passing. How ever, the kitchen and dining rooms should be screened at any rate. I hope every home will join this world-wide movement in fighting the fly. Here are a i few Don'ts which should be! kept in mind : Don't let any garbage accumu-' late. Don't fail to screen your house. Don't let flies get near any jone who is sick. Don't let your food go un screened. Don't let flies crawl over fruit, j Don't forget to keep your kitchen well swept out. Don't let flies have any food; without it they can't live. Don't relax your vigilance. Cleanliness is sure death to! , the fly.
