After eighteen years of litiga tion, Pilot Mountain with its OO.IKIH acres, is to be sold. A. C. Bernard, of Nashville, and J. C. Folger, of Winston-Salem, are the commissioners to sell, and the date is November !•. The commissioners have a right to receive bids pri r to that time, and to sell it they see tit. It is said the sale will involve more than $011,111)'). The celebrat ed case, Boling Whitfield et als, vs C. M. Bernard, et als. which has been in the Superior Court several times and to the Supreme Court twice, began over the land purchased by Andre Mathieu in inJl796. Judge[Gilliam, of k South Carolina, married the daughter of the original purchasers, and when Mathieu died he left the estate to his daughter for her life and the remainder in trust for the heirs. Some of the heirs went to Georgia and some are in North Carolina. North Carolina heirs are now represented by Mr. C. M. Bernard and his sons, of whom A. C. Bernard is one and the Georgia heirs of Boling Whit field, et als. ' SOME LIME FACTS. Land Owners Should Read i tins Caretullv Before Ls i mg Lin:e On Their Farms. The Xorth Carolina Depart ment of Agriculture sends out the following information in regard to the use of lime: Fact 1. l>o not use "burned" lime for agricultural purposes. It is caustic and will destroy the vegetable matter of your soils by "eating away its substance through chemical action." It thus reduces the organic matter content of your soils. liberates and dissipates your soil nitrogen into the air. and leaves \ our lar.u in a relatively impoverish ed condition. Fact 2. I'se only ground lime stone or marl on your soil. This form of lime helps to enrich your land and does not burn out your soil humus. There is. moreover, no danger from an overapplica tion of lime in this form. Fact o. Do not rely on ground limestone or marl, alone, to keep up the fertility of your land. The best results are obtained only when these materials are used in connection with liberal amounts of organic matter. Re member the proverbs: "Lime and lime without • green i manure make both son and father poor." and. "Lime combined with vegetable matter makes both farm and farmer better." Fact 4. Lime is said to liberate inert soil potash and render it available for the growing crop. Ail Piedmont North Carolina soils have an abundance of inert soil potash. Fact •">. Lime corrects soil acidity, accelerates the rot- ting ot green manuring crops and other forms of organic mat ter in the soil, and serves as a food for all kinds of plants: especially those of the legume family, such as the clovers, vetch, alfalfa, was. and beans. Fact Make liberal use of lime on land intended for pea nuts. alfalfa, and the clovers. Fact 7. It is advisable to spread lime over your meadows and pastures during the spring 1 months. Fact Spread lime over | your green manuring crops be fore turning them under, in order to hasten their decay early in the season. Fact !•. Spread lime at any convenient time, but preferably during the fall, winter, and spring months, when teams and men have most leisure. ! Fact 1". I'se from one to five tons of ground limestone to the aore, depending on the object for which you use it. For the correction of soil acidity on the far eastern "black lands." make the larger acre application. | Fact 11. Since lime dissolves readily in the soil, it is generally I better to make small applica- I tions at short intervals than large applications at long in tervals: i. e., it is generally bet ter to apply GOO pounds to the acre every year than to apply 2,000 pounds to the acre once in four years. Fact 12. Lime cannot take the place of thorough drainage in the correction of soil acidity. Drain first, then lime. Fact 13. Ground limestone and marl should be used in grades of different degrees of fineness. The finest materials become immediately available THE DANBURY REPORTER and are either used up by the plants or leached out of the soil: the coarser materials become more slowly available and thus last over a longer period. The very finely ground limestone, say that which will pass a 100 to 200-mesh sieve, costs more money at the quarry and does not last so long in the soil as that which j is ground less fine. I Fact 13. The State Depart-) ment of Agriculture will furnish ; ground limestone and high-grade] marl to the farmers of North | Carolina at the lowest possible j cost. The materials will be fur-1 nished in car load lots only, and j the ton price will depend on the. location of the shipping point i of the farmer. Fact l»i. Individuals who do' ■ not want as much as a car-load ; can club together and order a ■ car-load shipped to one point. Fact 17. Try to place your orders for ground limestone or marl at least six weeks before you want the material shipped. Fact l v . It is generally bet ter to order ground limestone and marl shipped in bulk be cause of the greatly reduced cost. For example, we will say a .Hi-ton car-load of giound lime stone costs $45 at the quarry when purchased in bulk: $1.2.5, additional for bags and bagging will make this car-load cost just •V'M.'KI more. or. in all, in addition to the freight. X nv, the farmer will haul only about a ton at a ! >ad from his station to the farm, and he generally has en hand enough bags to hold sufficient ground limestone for one good l»ad. He can, it is evident, use his own bags and do his own bagging at the car at little or no extra cost and save the !W7.3U on the car-load. Fact 19. Cash must accom panv all orders to the Commis sioner of Agriculture for ground limestone or marl. The ton price, "laid down at your sta tion," will be LI'VI on applica tion to the Con missioner of Agricultu.e as soon as it can be worked out. Fact 20. During the session of the Legislature of 1915, Hon. W. A. Bowman. Representative from Guilford county, introduced what is known as the "Bowman Lime Bill," which directs and empowers the Commissioner of Agriculture to furnish ground limestone and marl to the farmers of North Carolina at the lowest possible cost. The act is ap pended hereto. JAMES L. BI'RGESS. State Agronomist. Money Back Next Day Hamlin & Co., Danville, Va. make a specialty of Chickens, Etrgs and Rutter.
