PETE STONE NOT ALLOWED BOND Charged With Slaying His Own CtnJd —Preliminary Hearing j At Court House Monday | Morning- Pete Stone, who has been j held in Stokes jail here several, weeks and not allowed l>ond, on the unusual charge of slay-' ing his own child, was given j preliminary hearing in the . court house Monday morning, i a good number of witnesses and ! spectators being in attendance, i Sheriff John Taylor and cor-, oner C. J. Helsabeck were | among the witnesses examined at the trial which was presided over by Justice Jas. B. Joyce. Quite a number of other wit nesses were examined and Stone was held for Superior court, which convenes Oct- 14, without being allowed bond. Stone was represented by two attorneys, who endeavored to show that the child fell at its home and struck its head against a box, causing the two fractures of the skull which were found by the coroner at the autopsy performed when the child was disinterred sev eral weeks since, but the Jus tice thought there was suffici ent evidence to hold the defend ant for Superior court. COUNTY HTGH SCHOOLS OPEN King School Has Largest En rollment Prospects For Coming Session Are Bright. High schools at King, Wal nut Cove, Gennanton, Pinna cle, Pine Hall and Meadow, opened Monday morning with good attendance and with pros pects bright for a fine school year in every particular. The enrollment of pupils a I King again is larger than any school in the county, being 560 Walnut Cove had 381, German ton 325, Pinnacle 223, Pine Hail 132 and Meadows 121. The short term schools ol the county will open Monday, Sept. 30th- Two Young Men Arrested Sunday Night Rural Mounce and Everett Hooker, two young rrten of the Cove community, were •arrested Sunday night by Sher iff John Taylor on charges of being drunk, possessing liquor, and operating a car while under the influence of whiskey. Hook . er was beld for Superior court by Justice N. A. Martin here Monday, bond being fixed at $250.00- Mounce was fined $5 00 and cost for being drunk and possessing 3 pints of whis key. Clean Up and Paint Up The Lion's Club requests the Reporter to advise the people of Danbury and Walnut Cove to strictly observe clean up and paint up on Tuesday and Wed nesday 24th and 25th of Sep tember. Please don't fojret to look after your premises, and polish them up to look clean and bright, spick and span, and we don't mean may be. The people are coming Home Coming week from near and afar, and we want to look as good as we consistently can, the circumstances. TO TEACH FARMERS TO TERRACE School W ill lie Held On Farm of E. Alley, Near Dan bury, Ojn Sept. 26 and 27 All Farmers Invited- There will be a two day Ter racing School for the farmers of Stokes county on Thursday, and Friday, September 26th and 27th. This school will be held at the home of E. L. Alley, on the J. Spot Taylor farm, located onel mile srom Hart man Store and 4 miles north east of Danbury. This place was selected for the school lie cause it is located near the center of the county so that it is accessible to farmers from all sections of the county. Mr. A- T. Holman, specialist in Agricultural Engineering, will conduct the lessons aided by County Agent, J. E. Trevathan. Men and boys from all parts >i Stokes county are invited to attend this school and learn how to lay off and build ter races. As it will d«e impossible for the county agent to lay off all terraces that will be want ed in the county, it is import ant for all persons desiring terracing work on their farm.- to either attend the school in person or send some, one whc can do the work with some in struction. Persons who will not be abk to spend two days at the schoo are invited to come at any tinu during the instruction thai may be convenient to them. Tin school will begin at 9:00 A. R, King reports thut so far this season the sale of game license is far ahead of last year's sales. Mrs. R. I. Dalton 111 At Hospital Mrs. P.. I. Dalton, sister of Dr. W. V. MeCanless, of Dan bury, underwent an operation for appendicitis at a Winston- Salem hospital Sunday night. Mrs. Dalton is reported to be resting well and will likely be taken to her home in Winston- Salem this week. Messrs. J. A. Newsum, Jones Newsum, D. B. Young, J. P.. Young, and Jim Young left Stokes county yesterday morn ing with County Agent J. E. Trevathan, to attend the Guernsey cattle sale at Salis bury. John M. Taylor, of Winston • Salem, who owns a lake just cast of Danbury, this week completed a large club house at the lake. Mr Taylor has a most attractive place at his lake. 13-YEAR-OLD BOY SERIOUSLY SHOT Young Son of Chester F Jin ch um Received Load of Shot In Leg—Particulars of Ac cident Not Known. Thelmore Flinchum, the 13- year-old son of Chester Flin chum, of Danbury Route 1, is in a Winston-Salem hospital suffering from a gun shot wound in his left leg just below the knee, and so much of the flesh of the limb shot away that other flesh will have to be grafted to the wounded member. Physicians think that the limb can be saved, though the wound is a bad one. Thelmore and his first cousin, Woodrow Flinchum, aged 15, were in the woods near their homes squirrel hunting when the accident happened, but. neither of the boys at this time have satisfactorily explained just how it happened, though it was was doubtless a pure ac cident from carelessly handling the gun. It is learned from relatives of the bovs that they had 12- guage shot guns and were try ing to use 16-guage shells, and it is probable that in trying to make the small shells (it in the gun it accidentally lired and hit the boy. Road Work Here Was Finished Today The work of oiling and grav eling the highway from the end of the concrete in Danbury to the Buck Island bridge, 3 miles north of Danbury, on the Mt Airy-Stuart road, was finished today and is a very pretty road The road was first graded, then two coats of hot tar ap plied after which crushed lime stone was spread over the road and this rolled with a heavy roller. The State law say: that "written permission" mils ho secured before hunting oi another's land. Some prosecu tions are expected to follow. A reunion of the Wall family will be held at the old Wal homestead near Meadows nex Sunday, Sept. 22. AH relative and friends are cordially in vited to attend and carry has kets of good eats. Miss Eva Stephens, younj daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H Stephens, was taken to Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltirrtop this week, being accontpaniei by Dr. Spottswood Taylor, hoi mother and Uer brother- Mar ion Stephens. Miss Stephen) has been suffering from so mi nervous trouble. Leonard Stevens, driving tt Ford roadster, and anothet man. whose name was not learned by Mr. Stevens, driv ing a Ford touring ear, collided at a short turn on the Hart man road just east of Danbury Monday morning. Both cars were badly damaged but the occupants escaped unhurt. Sheriff John Taylor has been notified by State officials that John Fry, who was sent to the State prison from Stokes at spring term of Superior court this year, escaped with six oth er men from the State farm on Sept. Bth. Fry had a 12 mbnths sentence on a whiskey charge and has served 4 or 5 months. STOKES LIONS 3 HOLD MEETING Plans For "Clean Up" Week j. Are Perfected—"Home Com-. ing Week" Is Discussed— Mass Meeting Called. Walnut Cove* Sept. 16.—A call meeting of Stokes County , Lions Club was held in the town - hall at Walnut Cove at 7:30 i P. M. Monday, September 16, , with Lion Sparger in the chair. Lion Trevathan was appointed 1 to act secretary in the absence ; of Rev. Allen, who was away on j his vacation. Eleven members | were present- One new mem- i ber Paul Fulton, was received , with a short welcoming address j by President Sparger. Lion I Fulton responded with a few remarks. Lion Woodruff, chairman of the committee on arrange ments for "Clean Up' work re ported as follows. C. E. Davis and S. G. Sparg er appointed to see Town Com missioners and arrange for trucks, drivers and any other assistance the commissioners may give in connection with the clean up work. Dr. Helsabeck and Dr. Black burn were appointed to make out and distribute hand bills calling for a mass meeting of Walnut Cove citizens at school auditorium on Wednesday night, September 18th, and to have other hand lulls printed and distributed two days be fore the Clean Up days. 1 J. E. Trevathan was appoint ed to look after publicity. Paul Fulton, Wm. Marshall . and J. H. Woodruff were ap !>ointed to secure finances. W. P. Wheeler and P. W. Davis were appointed to see owners of vacant lots and buildings. Each ten members in Wal nut Cove were assigned one hour each to supervize the 'clean up work of the two days ' at the following specified hours with privilege of trading hours: D. W. Allen 7-8 A. M.; H. E. . Blackburn 8-5); C. E. Davis 10-11; Paul Fulton 11-12: Dr. Helsabeck 1:00 to 2:00 P. M : Wm. Marshall 2-8; S. G. Sparg er General Superintendent: T. E. Trevathan 8-4: W. P. Wheel er 4-6; J. H. Woodruff 5-6. The above report was accep ted in full by the Lions Club. It was suggested that sever al prizes might be given in con nection with the clean up | work. Mi'. C. E. I Dr. Helsabeck reported word- No. 2,992 MADISON TO HAVE TWO BIG DAYS Sept. 27 and 28 Are Set Aside Fur Community Fair and Ha by and Flower Show In That Progressive Town. The progressive town of Madison will put on a real com munity fair in connection with a baby and flower show on next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28. Premium lists have just been received here offering almost three hundred worth while prizes to be given for the best exhibits of farm products, flowers, canned goods, etc-, and to the prettiest baby girl and handsomest baby boy, not over two years of age. In these contests competition is open to all white residents of Stokes county. The object of the fair is to encourage and promote agri cultural development and to stimulate co-operation between the country folk and town folk, and every farmer is urged to carry an exhibit and his baby if he has one. and compete for the many nice prizes, while the ladies are asked to bring flowers and enter them in the contest. A 20-piece orchestra will furnish music for the big event, and on Friday night, the 27th, there will be a band concert with other entertaining fea tures. After this a street dance will be given. On Satur day night there will be a dance in the new warehouse. All who attend are promised two days and nights of real pleasure, and there will be n > fees to pay in connection witn any of the features of the fair- Brunswick Stew At Walnut Cove Sept. 21 The Ladies Aid Society of the Walnut Cove Baptist church expects to give a brunswick stew at some point on Main street there Saturday after noon, beginning at 5 o'clock. J. Taylor reported activities of the Governor's committee on Home Coming Week. This committee has had one meeting and Mr. J. C. Frans elected chairman and Mr. N. E. Popper Secretary. Another meeting was called by Mr. Tay lor at which meeting commit tees of five men and three lad ies of each township were ap pointed to co-opurate in making "Home Coming Week" a suc cess. Plans are being made to provide special ntertainment at Danburv on Saturday, Octo ber 12th. This report was ac cepted by the Lions Club. Lion M. 0.
